It just doesn’t, doesn’t get better. Thanks Joe!

Of course, I think the napkin is the best part.

You Race Fans out there

If I wasn’t anxious enough to be back out photographing the Races when  Josef goes and emails with the great news his book on the races is out. Josef is the nicest guy you’re going to ever meet, the friendliest and most helpful photographer I’ve come across in a long time, loves to laugh and dang if he ain’t a great photographer too boot!

You don’t have to take my word for the photography, you can check it out in his newly released book. I couldn’t find it instantly in the US, but I bet it will make it here. As for him being a nice guy and funny, those joining us at our New York DLWS will find out for themselves as Josef will be joining us.

When you run into Josef, ask him about chasing the solar eclispe around the North Pole in a AirBus. It’s a great story and he has photos to go with it!

SB-900 Firmware Update

November 19, 2008 by

Nikon has released a firmware update for the SB-900. The firmware addresses these issues:

  1. With uninterrupted shooting with the SB-900 set to i-TTL mode, images captured just before the flash ceased firing were sometimes overexposed. This issue has been resolved.  By resolving this issue, metering precision has been further increased and the number of times the flash fires has also been increased.
  2. When the SB-900, set to TTL auto flash mode, is used with a camera supporting the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), flash mode automatically changes to A mode according to camera communication status.  That flash mode was previously maintained, but it has been modified so that TTL auto flash mode is restored once the SB-900 again recognizes the camera as a CLS-compatible camera.
  3. More importantly Nikon has released the highly anticipated, star studded epic, academy award nominated, multi-million dollar production sequel,  Creative Lighting Dvd (In Stock) with Bob Krist & Joe McNally.

grab your camera, grab your flash, ditch the popcorn and dive in!

We’re hinting about it no longer, DLWS is heading to NYC 15-18, Nov ’09. We’re offering Joe’s New York, something that’s been in the works for a couple of years and having to wait another year will drive me nuts!

This movie requires Flash Player 9

This is a special event in every way! You’ll need to head here to get all the facts before you sign up. And while the event is already half filled, there is still room for 14 more folks. Hope you can make it, we’re going to have fun!

These photos were captured this past weekend as Jeff & I cruised lower Manhattan. It’s not a good example of what we’re going to photograph during DLWS but it sure offers up the possibilities.

Chambers Street Station

Inside and under the tile roof of the Chambers Street Station, jackets and gloves were required. The breeze coming off the river and wiping towards City Hall numbed the ears. It was only when we stopped to look for the next photo opp under the “dome” though that the chill actually sunk in. Jeff had a great time and captured some cool image as well. Check them out.

The Chambers Street Station is on the route to walking the Brooklyn Bridge, you might not have seen it though because it’s on the other side of the fenced walkway to the bridge. Looking from the outside walking to the bridge, you wouldn’t know the cieling is this cool, tiled doom. If you’re in the area, check it out, you’ll have fun.

Here’s a little more idea of what’s there from the Moose Cam.

On our way to Battery Park (which we never made) we took a detour to the Brooklyn Bridge. I just love that structure. On our way there, we walked into this way cool area you see here. I’m not telling, at least in this blog, where this is to give you native New Yorkers a little test on how well you know your town.

I don’t know how long we shot here, from the tile roof to through the arches and back again, it was just great shooting. They are calling my flight so I’ve got to run. I’ll get another image, Moose Cam and location posted tomorrow. Thanks for a great morning NYC!

Jeff & I meet real early this morning to go shooting (not) before I caught my flight. We grabbed a cab and headed to Canal Street. After a Starbucks starter, we hit the pavement and walked towards Battery Park.

We didn’t get too far before stopping to watch the clouds dance the light off the buildings. They don’t got these tall suckers where I live so I’m just fascinated by the light. Simply gorgeous! I had a moment between flights so wanted to get a couple images posted from the 1340 I captured today.

Moose Cam in Time Square

After the great time with the shooters of NYC, Jeff & I headed out on the town. We first had a marvelous dinner at Beccos (deeeeeeeelish!). Then we headed down to Radio City and then to Time Square.

We spent most of our time exploring the light. These table caught my attention as the lights reflecting in them changed them with every switch in the background lights. Then Jeff started to do motion blurs of taxis. When the carts came by, we turned our attention to them. Don’t like the bright background white light, but it was fun which is what photography is all about.

Speaking of fun, here’s another in the Moose Cam series

I want to thank all you have emailed who attended the talk yesterday. Great to see it was enjoyed on both sides of the aile.

I (insert heart here) NY!

I want to thank Lexar, B&H and especially the photographers who attended the presentations today in NY. We had a great crowd, they were lined up out the door at 10AM for the Noon presentation. Wow! That means a lot to me. But with 220 preregistered and only 75 seats per show, I can see why.

I particularly like the one request to keep saying Howdy and u’all to make them feel like they’re out west and not down town. I especially enjoyed hearing from folks how they are enjoying the Moose Cam. Just darn good fun. It was a great exchange amongst friends and want to thank everyone for making my three visits to the Big Apple in the last 40days so memorable.

Home, home, where's that?

I was on the plane heading home from Bozeman, MT and a KILLER DLWS event when I looked out the window to see the moon setting in the brewing storm, reflecting on this 49 day road trip. This leg lasted only 22 days starting in NYC and guess what, it’s going to end there as well. I’m home less than 24hrs and I’m heading out again.

I’m feverishly getting my presentation ready for the Sunday shows at B&H. That’s right, shows, plural! I’ll be yacking from 12-2:00 & 3-5:00, can’t wait! We’re going to talk about my favorite subject, critters, so look forward to sharing some I’ve meet and photographed with you.

Speaking of New York, DLWS is heading there Nov 2009. We’re just now finishing up the details now, but already 7 folks have registered  (from our MT event) and Joe’s imagination is working on the shoots. So, it will be back to NYC. Hot dogs!

DLWS MT Day 3 PM

We finished off our DLWS event at this monster of an old car junk yard. There were many ways one could explore its wonders, Kevin & I decided to continue on with flash but ditch the shadow art for now. We had three models for the participants to work with tonight, Kevin & I worked with Morgan (great gal!). Joe worked with Diana and Drew with another, and the participants were able to take advantage of all three set ups. We worked various story lines with different vehicles. The lighting was pretty simple. A single SB-900, 1/2 CTO shot through a Lastolite EZY Box. We had way too MUCH fun this week, sorry to see it end. Thanks to all our DLWS MT participants who made it one for the books!

I’m waiting for a huge crash at any moment, life is going that good! We had another great morning with a flash here, a flash there, a flash going everywhere! Joe’s infleunce and excitement when it comes to flash is infectious!

Kevin & I decided to take our shadow art and explored it further. We tried a number of things, this one turning out the best. It’s not perfect but good enough to encourage us to pursue it further. It’s just darn fun. Can you tell what’s the story line?

DLWS MT Day2 PM

What a great day! The folks venturing through MT with us are great, dead tired but really great! We went shooting in the snow this afternoon is this great town, Nevada City, the one I eluded to earlier in the week. Joe was showing some images this afternoon and talking about a “newish” technique with the Nikon SB-900 (did you see that Joe blogged HOURS after taking a landscape photo, a landscape photo? WOW!). It got Kevin and me a thinkin….

We hit the town and started with a safe subject, a train luggage cart to try the new technique. We then moved on to what you see above. What’s cool is, it was snowing when we took the photo! There’s no sunset, no shadows. Using Joe’s technique, we made the shadow right out of the gate. Thanks Joe! Kevin & I were just starting our third photo when the call went out for lighting demo. That’s when Joe works his magic live and on location. This time, Joe lit up an entire train with 4 SB’s and used our son Jake as the conductor. Well, we couldn’t miss that now, could we? The photo, well I took it since it was my son but it’s Joe’s shot so he gets to publish it first. But it was very cool and a great lesson.
