GearHead Wednesday 14 – 28

Got a gear question you want/need answered? I want to help and answer it. Send your gear questions to me at Gear Questions and I’ll do my best every Wednesday (accept there will not be one next Wed) to answer as many questions as I can. Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. So here’s this weeks questions …. OK Moose You’re heading off to photograph Grizzly Bears for the 100th time, what gear are you taking and why? Al Al, even as I write this I’m not 100% sure of everything I’m taking. I’ve photographed them so many times with so much different gear, I’m still pondering. For example, I’ve had as my prime long lens for the trip the: 300f2.8, 400f2.8, 200-400, 600f4 and last year for the first time, the 800f5.6AFS. This trip, I’m taking (I’m 99% sure) the following: Bodies: D4s (primary) D810...

Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. So here’s this weeks questions …. Moose: I have a D800 and D4 and have always preferred the “look” of the images from the D4 over those that come from the D800. It is hard for me to explain but it seems like D4 images have more depth and smoother, warmer color tones compared to the D800. First, has this changed with the D4s? And, has it changed with the D810? I know this is subjective but I would like to hear your opinion about this area. Adam Adam, a really DARN GOOD question! Color is SO essential to our visual communication,...

GearHead Wednesday – D810 Edition

Got a gear question you want/need answered? I want to help and answer it. Send your gear questions to me at Gear Questions and I’ll do my best every Wednesday to answer as many questions as I can. In this case, had a WHOLE bunch of D810 questions that I wanted to answer in this Thursday Edition of GearHead Wed. Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. And at this point, I have had limited time with the D810 but here it goes with the most common asked question first …. Is the D810 a game changer? Is it what the D800 should have been? NO, it’s not for either! It’s hard to understand where I’m coming from, I realize that but I make my living by my clicks. The tools I have MUST deliver on many fronts, not just what you might read on some review...

Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. So here’s this weeks questions …. I am faced with a difficult problem and mostly it is money related (of course), but I have a Canon 1D Mark II which shoots at 8fps, but I am looking to upgrade to an 18mp 1.6 crop sensor for my bird photography. The reasoning behind this is to have more ability to crop for different size birds on the perches and to give me a stop or two more in ISO. The problem is that the cameras I now can afford are only around 5 or 6 fps vs 8fps. How much of a difference...

GearHead Wednesday 14 – 25

Got a gear question you want/need answered? I want to help and answer it. Send your gear questions to me at Gear Questions and I’ll do my best every Wednesday to answer as many questions as I can. Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. So here’s this weeks questions …. Thanks for your insight into so many subjects. My question is about memory cards. Had a 3 year old Scandisk Extreme III 16GB CF card give me an issue. “Card cannot be opened”. After some sweating and file recovery software, I recovered all the NEF’s along with what appears to be most of every NEF ever taken on the card. I reformat when I put any card in my D700 and usually limit my cards to about 500 shots before downloading and reformatting. Do you do something different or limit your cards to a certain life?...

GearHead Wednesday 14 – 24

Got a gear question you want/need answered? I want to help and answer it. Send your gear questions to me at Gear Questions and I’ll do my best every Wednesday to answer as many questions as I can. My apologies, but it’s a little short this week because so many of the questions were repeats of ones already answered here. I simply don’t have the time to repost already answered questions. Keep in mind the answers are just my $.02 worth and you have to take what works for you and your photography and embrace it and ignore the rest. So here’s this weeks questions …. Hi Moose, I just saw your video on tripod maintenance and it was very informative. I saw that you have a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod and it has knuckles (g-locks) to lock the leg sections in place. I have a Giotto carbon fiber which also has knuckle leg section locks. The problem I have is that the locks are very hard to turn...
