Joe McNally has a flare for faces and people, and when it comes to a character in front of the lens, he has found one of the best in Donald. I’ve enjoyed photos of Donald taken by Joe for years but never thought I would ever have Donald in my viewfinder. Well, the NM DLWS changed all that. I meet Donald, I befriended Donald and best of all, I was able to photography him.<\/p>\n

What is it about Donald that is so magical? It’s the knowledge he has both photographic and being a character. Seriously, when someone is photographing him and he thinks the lighting is bad, he lets you know. If you’re using a reflector, he had no issue reaching out and positioning it for better light on himself. And he has no problem telling you he still shoots film.

Now I felt pretty darn good when photographing Donald because our conversation was about everything but my screwing up. It was great fun when one participant photographed Donald with his camera set to CH and ripping off 9fps, Donald just started to crack up. “Is that a machine gun you’ve got there?” “What, afraid you can’t get it right with just one frame?” I lucked out because I was shooting with the D3x, I couldn’t get in trouble if I wanted to.

It would seem that a little of Donald’s character comes out in my photos because I’ve received a number of requests to post more. I didn’t have him in that many different settings. But I did make the most of each one I had. The lighting, all natural, no flash used here. A gold reflector was used in the top two, the bottom one is a single beam of sunset light coming through a few pains of the prison glass. The the glint, that’s pure Donald. He’s great!<\/p>\n
