I was so happy with this photo, the first I’d take of an F-22 Raptor back in 2008. It was sharp and all of it was in the frame. The fact the light sucks, the gesture, well there is none, didn’t even register. At least, not that first day, week or month. But going over my photos as I normally do after the glow of success has warned off a few months later, ya, it sucked. It’s then I analyze what works and what doesn’t work and just being sharp is not a mark of success. There was a ton of room for improvement. <\/p>\n

While gear has changed in the last decade (shot with D5<\/a> \/ 180-400VR<\/a>) making focus pretty much a slam dunk, that wasn’t where I need to improve. It was the STORY I wanted to tell that needed the vast overhaul. Learning when to depress the shutter release and when not to, not settling for just sharp. Light and gesture are so important in grabbing the viewers attention and then placed in the frame with the background to express the miracle of flight. I’m always pleased to see I’ve learned from past mistakes to move the ball forward. I look forward to another decade of improvement, thank goodness!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
