I had a marvelous weekend here “working” in the office during our Sierra Bird weekend. We had some great birds come on by for the guys and some T’d up long enough for me to make a click or two. As the boys learned, shooting birds at our office is really pretty darn easy, at first.
I took the opportunity to shoot over their shoulders every now and again and do some testing with the new 300PF and teleconverters. The 300PF by itself is an blistering sharp, super fast focusing lens that works perfect out the windows of the office. One of the boys gave it a test drive while he was here. I had to dig it out of his camera bag when he was packing to leave. The other ordered one on the spot. It is just that good! But how about with teleconverters?
I’ve posted images already with the new TC-14E III. That’s sweet! Shooting with the D4s, I tested the 300PF with the TC-17eII and TC-20eIII. The top two images are with the 2x and the bottom two are with the 1.7x. As you can see for yourself, the results are gorgeous! Can easily recommend ANY of the Nikkor converters with the 300PF! But what about AF performance?
The AF performance of the 300PF and the TC-17e II was great! AF speed and capture was sweet. With the TC-20eIII though as you might expect, AF speed and capture was slower. It wasn’t impossible but in low light, as one would expect, the AF speed was noticeably slower. The amazing thing to me though, with the 2x attached to the 300PF, the combo is shorter than a 70-200f2.8 and weighs so much less. This is a 600f8 lens are amazing optical quality in the smallest package. If you’re looking for an amazing lightweight, super sharp lens for critters, the 300PF just keeps getting better and better!
