I love doing time lapse (latest one I shared)! Been doing them for a long time and quite often, I do them just as a way to remind myself of the time and place, not to be shared. The D810 has a new “exposure smoothing” algorithm that is part of its Time-lapse that I wanted to try out prior to hitting the field with it (this was shot from our deck).
Time-lapse Photography is in My Menu so I selected it, set Interval to 15″, Shooting time to 6:25′ hours, Exposure smoothing On and got ready to go. The rig, D810 / 24f1.4 AFS loaded with Lexar 128GB SD (I have video saved to the SD slot) with the battery fully charged and hot out of the charger. The Time-lapse feature in the D810 (like in the other bodies) processes and saves the time lapse as a .mov when done. With the afternoon thunderstorms dancing about, I thought it would be a cool end result. And while we didn’t have a killer sunset, the final clip worked very well, better than with the D4s actually I think when it comes to exposure. I was impressed that the time lapse (I stopped it at the 5hr mark when clouds didn’t disperse so we could see the stars) took only half the battery and produced a 90MB file. With this baseline test done, it’s off to do more.
