The afternoon didn’t offer up just one species, but over a dozen great opportunities. I say our foks swapping out lexar cards a few times. That’s a good thing! This is a Forrester’s Tern that was busy taking advantage of the fish panic caused by the fishing pelicans.

There was the always present, cooperative and comical Snowy Egrets. They provided some great portrait and flight photography.

But the winner of the friendliest award is this Ruddy Turnstone that walked right up to every one of our lenses, right in order, and performed. It’s darn good fun to get down in the sand and play, and make great images at the same time! And yes, that’s a fly being flushed up by the turnstone.

The Moose Cam was mounted on the bracket, the 600VR & D3x dying to crank out some images. The light was great, the wind was perfect and, nothing! The Osprey were at the nest, but they had fed before we arrived so by the time we got there, no action. The morning was a bust. So, off to eat we went like all good wildlife photographers.

Once the hard light had gone by, we headed off to the Fishing Pier and the afternoon show. And man, was it a show!

The Florida Brown Pelicans just fished and fished and fished! And they did it at point blank range. The only trick was finding the “purty” males and clean backgrounds. Solid panning was so important as well as moving with the action. This has always been one of my favorite all time shooting locales, and it didn’t let us down this afternoon.

With the end of the holiday weekend, there was only one place to head to shoot this evening, the docks! The fisherman are coming in with their catch and cleaning them. With the scraps come the birds and in particular the Florida Brown Pelican. I was bummed I missed the total primary tips on the right. Gotta work on that.

Ah, to wiggle the ol toes in the warm Florida sands, wasn’t going to happen today. We went out to neither sun or fog but overcast. With those conditions, it was off to Ding Darling. The third lagoon had the Roseattes, not in the greatest scenario but still, they are Roseattes. It was a challenging shoot with minimal light, distracting foreground, birds not in their finest plumes, but shooting it was none the less. It required the 600VR & TC-17e with HSC to get this shot of a single bird on this cool perch. I was testing the D3x in HSC just to see what I would get. It’s not a viable option for the price IMHO.

When I framed this up, all I could say to myself are the words of the Double-crested Cormorant, “Would you marry me….please?”

It might have been the warm temps, might have been the excitement of not being in the office, could have even been McNally having an adverse effect on me, whatever it was, I was in a artsy fartsy mood this week. This is by far the more traditional type of art from snow, the wind blown sculpture created by snow on a rock. The trick here for me is to find this “art’ in the shade so the shadows are real soft then finishing in the digital darkroom using white point/black point. Then there is the untraditional…

This is Patrick Richard Harry, a ~really~ nice guy who was a participant at our Yellowstone DLWS (we will be returning in 2011). At first introductions, I warned him he would be a model, but I never thought by me. We were at Fountain Paint Pots when a minor irruption occurred and Patrick was standing right there. The rest was real simple. I just lined up his hair with the steam, stopped giggling and clicked. Both images though have a couple of things in common, shape, color and whimsy. Just havin fun!

We spent the afternoon in one of my favorite location, Upper Geyser Basin, home of Old Faithful. As you can see, it was a gorgeous afternoon with magical afternoon light.

This is Castle Geyser, many years ago the site where its steam took the coating off my 16mm. Even so, it’s one of my favorite geysers because of all its character. The color in the foreground, the shape of the cone, the steam and blue sky just always grab me!
