NH is just blowing me away! So are the great folks we have with us here at DLWS. As per tradition, is was Monday morning shake down where we shake out the cobwebs and camera settings and start filling pixels with passion. No better place then the slimpicity of the waters of Wildcat River.

“What’s the Subject?” That’s a common question I ask not only myself of my photos but those seeking help. It’s your responsibility as photographers to make your subject smack the viewer right between the eyes with it. That is the challenge. NH is providing, it’s up to me to meet it.

We are very excited to officially announce our Air2Air Workshop series. Being taught with my dear friend, mentor and world renown aviation photographer Richard VanderMeulen, this workshop takes flight for the first time 12-14 Nov, 2010 in Phoenix, AZ. There is literally no other workshop on the planet like this one!

We have an amazing workshop planned for you! The prize in our Air-to-Air photography in Nov is a B-17 Flying Fortress escorted by a P-51 Mustang (as long as they are flying, they do break down sorry to say so no guarantee). As backup, we’ll have to do with a B-25 Mitchell. I can’t wait! We have other aircraft scheduled for the other air-to-air (like a possible TA-4 Skyhawk) as well as a full, giant flash, sunset static shoot extravaganza! You’ll be learning everything from the art of air-to-air to flash to statics to exposure and composition romance to digital darkroom and a whole lot more! (can you tell I’m excited?!) We even have one of the best air-to-air pilots in the business, Doug Rozendaal as not only one of our pilots but as an instructor. Hot damn, have we packed this thing! And this is just the first one, wait until we get the wind under our wings for our next workshop in March, 2011.

With all we have going, I simple can’t keep track of what’s happening, when, where. If you’re wanting to join us on a workshop, don’t know how you could know either which is why occasionally I post these updates. The most common question is in regards to our DLWS events. While they are posted as full, we do have cancellations which we fill from our waiting list. This month we have had six folks for various life reasons, have to postpone their time with us which we filled from the waiting list. So if you want to join us for any of our DLWS events:

This is what we all love, a tight race! Does it look scary? I think so, look how close those planes are going past Home Pylon and turning into Pylon 1! Not only does this make for a really exciting race, it makes for really exciting and challenging photography! To get this shot, the majority of the time you have to look down the course, look at the planes coming and make the decision, are they going to line up in front of your lens or not? So you commit to the stack up or go for the single? Then of course with this come the, “do you go vertical or horizontal?” This is one of the great aspects of shooting at Reno, it keeps your skills sharp!

I’m off to the races. Yeap, another year has flown by and it’s time to volunteer again at the Nikon center in the Press Center at the Reno Air Races. Sharon, Jake & I look forward to this every year and this year, we’re taking Stephanie so she can get hooked on this amazing event. As you can imagine, I will be blogging there for the next five days. Yeap, I’ll be blogging over the weekend and on Sunday, have some fun things to announce so stick around!

But here’s the deal, can I afford to act like a kid this time? Before, I was at the races for the sheer fun and passion of it. The images I took weren’t really for anything more than your & mine enjoyment. But in 2010, things changed and as you’ll be able to read about in the upcoming issue of the BT Journal, we went and made a business out of my aviation work. So to put all my cards on the table, I’m a bit nervous going up to Reno this time. On the business side, we’re taking most of the office staff with us, have Stephanie contracted out shooting, I’ll be shooting, the capitol outlay to put us all in place this time has to turn a profit. It’s not just for fun anymore, it’s not just a break even proposition but it actually as to turn a profit. In my own mind I have to ask, can we do it?
When it comes to wildlife photography, I know that with each click there is no pay and after 30yrs have become quite comfortable with that. Outlaying capitol for a project knowing we won’t see a return for years and years is OK, we have a business plan for that. But such is not the case with aviation, we need it to return on the investment in a much shorter period of time. While I don’t expect every click to return a dime, at the end of the day though I will need to see something, a carrot dangling out in front of me or the pressure might just take the fun or worse, the passion out of the event. I’ve seen that happen all to often in other photographers, working like hell to avoid it for myself. Only time will tell.
