Howdy you all! A number of folks have been contacting me to tell me it might be raining tomorrow. As a wildlife and aviation photographer, I’m all into that weather stuff and how to make lemonade as we call it when it does rain. The photo above was taken from a dry hangar during an epic downpour so it can be done. I’m writing this to let you know we’re still doing the Precon, weather ain’t stopping a thing. But you might want to come prepared for the rain (yes, it might be a little damp). Have a rainshell for yourself and you’ll be fine. Bring a small, white towel to pat your gear dry (we’ll go over that in class). And finally, you might bring a longer lens than normal. For example, this photo of a FG-1D Corsair (like what we’ll have at Precon) was taken with the 80-400. I could shot from the hangar with the longer lens. I have a plan A, B, C and now working on D so come prepared, we’re going have fun!

Click 2 Click is a shooting & finishing class for YOUR photography!
We have new snow and killer vistas, it’s going to be a killer weekend in the Sierra to have a camera and able to shoot with confidence you’re making the photo! Listening to all the feedback from the last couple of years of weekend courses and requests we’ve received, we’ve come up with a whole new course. This Click2Click is held in the gorgeous Sierras in Mammoth Lakes, CA and is all about YOUR photography. Hosted at the four star Westin in Mammoth, our first one is 19-20 April,and we’re looking forward to your joining us!
Simply put, Saturday is all about the camera click and Sunday is all about the computer click. We will be shooting on Saturday with your widest lens to your longest, with ambient light and flash. The techniques can be applied from critters to rocks and everything in between. Sunday we’ll take the images we shot on Saturday and finish them in the computer (we’re at the Westin the entire time). Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there is information here to help your photography grow.
The space is limited to 15, price is $595 and stay at the Westin is required (at our special group rate, not included in the price). Those who can and want to shoot sunset on Friday, the 18th with me, can do so for a small additional fee. Price includes instruction Sat/Sun and a 12pg location shoot list of all my favorite local haunts with directions and photography ideas.

This is a two day, 18hrs course for just 12 folks You will need to bring just your camera body, basic lens, computer, functioning brain and energy. The class itself is being help in midtown Manhattan.

This has to be the #1 question I ask photographers. Why? Because we’re visual storytellers and to be successful, we have to not only know the subject, but the viewer of the photograph has to know what it is as well. In this photo, what’s the subject? At this point, I hope you say it’s the lighthouse. That’s because I did something to make sure you see it first. The mind’s eye goes to white and bright first when looking at an image. Until I “lit” the lighthouse, the mind’s eye beelined right to those waves. But they are an element, not the subject. So by lightening the lighthouse just 1/3 of a stop in post, now the mind’s eye goes there first. And what amazes me about knowing this is, the lighthouse is one of the smallest elements in the frame but you see it first. It’s a very simple but very important lesson when it comes to photography.

Ya, the name might be Photoshop World but it’s a whole lot more than that! Sure, you learn lots of Photoshop stuff, lots of Lightroom stuff, a lot of digital darkroom stuff, period. But you can also learn a whole lot about photography from some of the best shooters. I think more than anything else, all the instructors are at Photoshop world to share their greatest gift, their passion for communicating visually! 50 IN 60 – TOOLS, TECHNIQUES AND TRICKS TO USE AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

You’ll get 50 must have tips in 60 minutes from basic to advance to make all the difference in capturing the moment to create the memory. The trick is following the KISS Theory and using those that work for YOUR photography.
And so much more! All the instructors including myself you will see all the time because it’s YOU that makes PSW so magical! The interaction with all you great folks who come is why I go to PSW. For example, you might see us walking down the hall (it’s a family affair, the entire Peterson herd is at PSW) and say, “Hey Moose, where and how did you take that lighthouse photo in that post?” And we could take a moment to talk where I would say something like “head to Oregon and the amazing Cape Meares Lighthouse where you can walk right up to the light at eyelevel and when you go there in the winter months, the sun sets right behind it. With a body like the D4s and a lens like the 24-70AFS so you get up close and personal and have a big dynamic range, you can make the click. Then in post, you use ACR to bring out the glow in the light and then in PS you use Nik Color Efex Pro to finish that glow.” And then if you had further questions, you could ask them. Or go to a class to see it in action. And so much more! So while the name might be Photoshop World, don’t get confused, it’s really all about experiencing the light!

We first meet Susie Yazzie back in 2010. Our dear friend Albert is her nephew so we meet her being a friend of the family. Sussie is a legend and when we first meet her, she was nearing the century mark in age, so her daughter, Effie was there to help her. Either being with Albert, having the name Moose or both left an impression so we were always warmly greeted at their Hogan. Sadly, Sussie passed away in 2013. She was such a calm, peaceful and loving spirit who I loved to talk with. She will be missed.
Effie though is carrying on her mom’s legacy in her mom’s Hogan, spinning and weaving at the loom. Effie retired as a nurse so the Navajo craft of weaving continues with both the next generation of Navajo and those who visit the Hogan. You can see a photo of Sussie in the lower right corner of the photo. This Hogan is located on the backcountry loop that you need a guide to enter and then you need the right guide to visit the Hogan. Or in our case, a family member. Albert always introduces us to a new family member each visit and we are very grateful that on our first visit to the valley, we got to know Sussie. Sharing is very much a Navajo tradition we have been blessed to be included in.
So with that tradition of sharing, I shared with Albert a photo trick or two that he then shares with some of his clients. One of those “tricks” I shared with him was in this very Hogan. This is Albert you see here standing in the shaft of light that comes down in the center of the Hogan. Wanting to work the light that comes in the door but give it a little direction, I showed Albert on our first visit how he could bounce light from this ceiling shaft using a framed piece of white cloth that was there. That’s what’s pushing the light into the back of the Hogan in the photos above. Shooting with the D4s (ISO800) / 24f1.4AFS, it’s then very simple to move about to make the shots of Effie. And Albert, I like the drama in the light on him, but it doesn’t reflect his personality at all. He always makes me laugh and takes such good care of of. He treats us like family!

This is a two day, very intensive course to give you the knowledge and confidence to take your camera and make those great images you desire to tell your story. We start in the classroom getting to know our cameras. We then go out for very targeted photography to make the shots to learn more about our cameras. Finally, we’re back in the classroom taking our photographs we just took into the Digital Darkroom to learn how we finish what we started when we went click.
