Collapsing thunderstorm captured by Z 8 / Z24-70f2.8

My lightning app dinged so I knew that a lightning strike had hit within twelve miles of me. I looked at the radar, the storm was moving my direction so I grabbed the Z 8 / 24-70f2.8, Miops and Benro Tortoise tripod and ran out. I saw the rainbow and I knew the storm had already released its energy so no show. I was just saying how that happens and no sooner I posted the thought and bang, it nailed me. With the sun heading west I figured I’d walk around and wait to see what would come of the light.

With the slight amount of wildfire smoke in the air, the orange was deep and rich bringing a different kind of drama to the storm. No need for any WB modification here, if anything, I toned it down in post as it was burning. You can see in the image below the intensity that was there if only for a short time. In the photo above just to give you a sense of scale, you can see the United 737 flight into MSO above the watermark. This is big sky country and getting out with a camera whether I catch the lightning or not is always fun and, gorgeous. And as it turns out, a perfect example …
