The Tree Mouse

When I first started birding many years ago, one bird we’d make a field trip to see is the Tree Mouse. When my birding friends said we were looking for a tree mouse, I was a little more than confused. I dove for my Golden’s bird ID book (dating myself now) and went to the index, there was no “tree mouse”. It was then I was informed, we were looking for the Brown Creeper. This amazing, tiny, cryptic bird “creeps” up trees trunks looking for food hidden under its bark. This is why you normally only see them in pine forests. How small? We’re talking the size on your thumb, and about that plump. Between their size, colorization and specialized habitat, finding anyone of the four subspecies in NA is a fun challenge. Photographing them takes this all to a new level!

Brown Creepers creep up a tree trunk foraging and when they are done, they launch off the trunk and head to the bottom of the next tree. They don’t go straight up a tree, rather, corkscrew up and around making following them with a lens, a fun past time. We are fortunate to have them here at The Ranch, spending a lot of our time watching them but rarely do I put myself through the trials of trying to follow them with a lens. I was working with the chickadee gang when I saw the creeper dart in and for a change, my brain functioned enough so instead of just watching it with admiration, I pointed the lens at it. The bottom photograph is my favorite as it really does a great job showing it blending in. The upper image I love cause you can see how beautiful its cryptic plumage really is. Seeing them takes me back in time birding with the gang on the hunt the tree mouse.
