Been hanging out in hangars a lot and often, making presentations on the walls. They are nice and big … and very bright. Both of which got me looking at replacing my digital projector (I do presentations in more traditional locales as well). I got the PowerLite 1980WU WUXGA 3LCD Projector and man do I love it! Oh brother have projectors come a long ways in a decade! My first projector was a Kodak V600 I got back in the summer, 2000 (gone through a few since). It had a native resolution of 800×600 (SVGA) with 1000 Lumens (it’s still in the cupboard). It was portable and did a great job for its day. But man, the new Epson 1980WU is simply spectacular!
The Epson 1980WU has a native resolution of 1920×1800 (WUXGA) with 4400 Lumens and it’s portable. What you can’t tell no matter what I write is how bright and beautiful the images are that come out of this gorgeous box of light! Even during daylight hours on the inside of a hangar, you can see the images! It has a focusing aid, sound system, zoom in and split screen. And did I mention, it’s portable. This is for sure a speciality item for photographers but when it comes to sharing your photos, nothing better than a slideshow. And when you do a slideshow you want your images to look their best. That’s when you want to turn to Epson, printing and projection!
I’ve had more than a few interesting emails in the last week in regards to the new 24-70VR lens. Summing up the emails is simple, “Why did you buy the lens when the tests show it’s not as good as the old 24-70?” The answer is pretty darn simple, I find the lens not only a tad better, but the VR on some projects might be a life saver. What I need some folks to understand is, that just because I like it doesn’t mean you need to buy it. Nor that I do or don’t believe the tests. I tried to make this clear last write up on this lens, but emails keep coming in. The results I’m getting are making me and last two clients, quite happy. Personally, I can ask no more from a lens.

I get asked a lot about mics for DSLR video. I have a number of mics for DSLR video, they are just as specialized as the lenses we use. When it comes to recording what I call “ambient” sounds, there is none better than the Rode VideoMic X! What I did was simply set up the D4s / 24-70VR next to the feeder with the Rode VideoMic X in the hot shoe. I had the WR-T10 (taking advantage of the new firmware) attached and just sat back and waited for the Evening Grosbeaks to come in to record. This video your watching is just for sound. I didn’t light it because it was snowing. The lights slow down the Grosbeaks coming back into the feeder and I didn’t want snow blowing in and making a bigger mess than I already created in a few minutes.

I had neither the wind muff or dead cat on the VideoMic X, none was needed. But if you listen carefully with your computer speakers or better with headphones, you can hear the beauty of the VideoMic X. Listen to how the sound of the Grosbeaks go from left to right, right to left and straight down the middle. It does a gorgeous job with all these sounds and that’s why I love this mic. The more I print with the Epson P800, the more I’m loving it! I’ve spent the last 36hrs printing with the P800 all sorts of tests, mainly with the new Epson Legacy papers. I might not have heard of the Legacy Papers yet as they won’t be on the market until January. But man … I’m in love as will you be! My Epson buddy got me fixed up with a bunch of sample packets so I could test to my hearts content. There are two, Platine & Fibre that are just bloody amazing, especially out of the P800! How am I testing? Actually it’s pretty simple. I’ve selected a whole bunch of images with varied subjects, light and color. I print each image on all four papers, keeping track of everything. Then I simply compare all the images on one particular paper type. Nothing scientific, it’s all measured by what I feel when I view the print. I know already that Platine will replace Exhibition and Fibre will replace Hot Press Bright in our office once the full size sheets are available. mtc
