More and more it sounds like haunting garage sale for photography can have historic treasure. You have the Billy the Kid photo a few weeks back, Ansel Adams before that and the list goes on and on. The film above found in WA at a garage sale. And while that’s really cool to be found and preserved, it had to be photographed in the first place. The photo of Billy the Kid, he was just play croquet. The movie above just a fly in, there was nothing extraordinary about the subjects. At this when it was taken. Same thing could be said about what we photograph today. If nothing else, this is proof how important YOUR photography is though! You have no idea if, forty, fifty, sixty years from now YOUR images are “found” and celebrated because they tell a story of a time gone by. No matter the subject, the time or place, this is another reason why we must shoot!
Oh, the reason for this Monocoupe photo is because there is a Monocoupe in the film being hand propped by Jonathan Livingston. Jonathan Livingston not only a famous race pilot of the day, but as the story goes, the figure behind the famous book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull!.
Double checked the B&H tracking number and yes, the new 24-70VR lens is hours away from my hands! You might be wondering why I’m getting this lens when I have the 24-70AFS which has been such a solid producer since I first received it back in fall, 2007. I’m told it’s not only sharper but built to take more abuse. Mine “old” 24-70AFS did take a whack and the zoom started to bind so if that possibility has been eliminated (no, not going to start hitting the new one to determine this) than that’s a good thing. The 24-70 is an important lens in my bag. I can’t wait. Wonder if Sharon will bring coffee to the me on the porch, it’s getting cold waiting!
Video folks, all photographers actually, X-Rite has released a number of important products for your color. Their Color Management system for video, DSLR video in particular, is a killer option for simple and predictable color in your project. In particular, check out their ColorChecker Video which is real slick. Color management is important and this is the best which your photography, videography deserves!
“Why use the D750 at Bryce instead of the 810?” recently popped up in my Twitter feed. The answer was quite simple, wireless. But I got the feeling that answer didn’t work for some so thought I should explain. When working with other photographers and helping them to “see” what I’m “seeing” when the camera can’t deliver the finished photo, working wireless is a killer teaching tool. In this case, shooting B&W, “seeing” not only the B&W image but how it looks once finished. I sent the image to the iPhone 6, ran the D750 image through Photoshop Express and Photoshop Fix. By being able to “finish” a photo in the field, holding up the iPhone to see the reality and the perception is a powerful tool for learning. Since wireless is built into the D750 and works so perfectly, it produces big, beautiful files, the reason why I shot with it instead of the D810 was simple, wireless.
Our friends at LensCoat has come out with two great mods to their bean bag support line. LensSack Pro (seen above) and LensSack ProJr (seen below) bring the addition of a metal plate adding a vast amount of stability to our gear. What I really like about these is their ability to conform to any car/truck/van door while keeping the working experience the same. You might be asking why you don’t see my product shots here? Well, I went out last night to do just that, and it started to rain. I woke up and it’s still raining. Since we need the rain so bad, I left the Pro on the truck door just so it would keep on raining. Rain or shine, these are the best bean bags I’ve seen for a long time!
