The Eastern Sierra, in particular Mono Lake, are spectacular in the fall! We’ve been granted a permit to have a photographic workshop at South Tufa, Mono Lake this October and we’re very excited! The Forest Service is only permitting two groups at a time at South Tufa this year which means to us, we basically have the place to ourselves!
Starting the evening of the Sept 30th, we’ll gather and talk about photography and get ready for the next day. Sunrise on 01 Oct, we’ll be on the shores of Mono Lake enjoying its beauty and celebrating it with our images. Then after breakfast, we’ll go through ALL the photos from the morning to learn from our efforts then head back out to explore the High Sierra. Then we’ll venture back to South Tufa for a gorgeous sunset shoot. And if that wasn’t enough, after dinner we’ll gather in the digital darkroom to learn how to finish and share our images.
The morning of the 2nd, we’ll start shooting heavenly bodies at South Tufa and then enjoy and shoot sunrise. We’ll join for breakfast and a crit of images and then disperse to head home. All this shooting and instruction, a written packet of all my favorite shooting locals are included in your registration (food, lodging & transportation not included). This is for a small group of shooters and the price is $595!

Yep, a Moose podcast is in development! Plans are to have it up and running in February, a twice monthly podcast about photography. I’ll be covering everything photographic from behind the camera, behind the computer and behind the dollar and so much more. And it’s meant to be interactive, to help you with your questions. So you got one or more, send them to Moose Podcast (emails sent to this address will get no direct response) and I’ll do my best to get them answered. And then watch the site for when they begin. It should be fun!

Sooo … did you get it, did you get that new piece of camera gear you wanted for Christmas? I was fortunate and got what was on my list, a TC-14eIII so I don’t have to borrow one anymore. Now the challenge begins, making magic with that new gear. Here are some suggestions for you that might help you rocket forward your knowledge base and use of that new gear. If it’s a camera body, make sure you have the latest firmware installed. It can make a difference and you want that machine working its best for you. Next, you need to go through all the settings and make sure certain things like Color Space is set to Adobe RGB.

Don’t know what settings to use, I have a knowledge base of settings here you can use as either starting points or what you use all the time. What if you got a new lens? Sit and stand in your home and practice, practice, practice handholding with it! Finally, what ever that new piece of gear might be, marry yourself to it. For the next couple of weeks, shoot just with it if applicable until you know all it can and can’t do. Make notes, take photos, put them in a folder with the name of the piece of gear and learn all it does that melds with your style of photography. With that knowledge base you have created for yourself, you can then go out and make the most of that piece of gear. And there is no better way to keep the Christmas spirit all year long then enjoying that gift!

Telling the story in large part is the play of light on the subject. It leads the eye like the opening sentence in a paragraph and when done right, wraps it up neatly with the ending sentence. I’ve been working for over a year on a project photographing pilots, special pilots using Profoto B1s and B2s. Profoto posted a BTS on our shoot with Derek and FM-2P Wildcat. You might enjoy the story.

Over the weekend I posted about firmware updates to the D4s / D750. Now normally, I don’t post on the weekend but this firmware was simply TOO important to ignore. If you don’t shoot much video or own the bloody amazing (and totally under sold) WR-T10, then its importance probably didn’t sink in. But it’s real simple, with this firmware upgrade, you can remotely start and stop video recording with the WR-T10! This soooo very simple thing makes ALL the difference in easily shooting video. Had a few folks ask today the point of the firmware update and to me, this is the biggie that got me all excited! Talk about a great stocking stuffer, the WR-T10 if you don’t already own this very inexpensive Nikon remote! And this firmware makes the WR-T10 even more powerful. Schweet!
