The cold bite of the crisp air, the gray of the granite, the blue of gorgeous skies and the blazing color of fall, simply gorgeous! Basing out of Cripple Creek, CO we’re chasing fall color, vast landscapes and old western history. Sharon & I have been leading these small, intimate photographic adventures for a few years now and truly enjoy them. We’re very happy to offer this workshop 23-27 Sept, 2015. The price is $1895 and includes transportation to and from the airport and during the event plus instruction (photographic and digital darkroom). I also need to mention we have an opening in our Northern California Coast / Oregon Cost adventure 18-22 March, 2015. This photo of Battery Point is just one of the many great landscape subjects we have on this adventure. And in the digital darkroom session we’ll go through on your computer my invention of the Photoshop light beam.
Tall trees, long beaches, rocky cliffs, gorgeous flowers and amazing food. Those are just some of the reasons we love the No California & Oregon Coast. Sharon and I are offering a workshop we’ve never done before but have always wanted to. We’re going to spend the first couple of days in the California Coast and then finish up the last couple of days on the Oregon Coast. We’re taking just five folks, cost is $1995. A real common question this time of year is “What gloves do you use? Back in the day, I would haunt every outdoor store I ventured by and gleaned the glove display trying to find the glove that kept my hands warm and permited me to shoot. Then our sons got into xcross skiing and I found the Swix gloves and fell in love. From past experience, I bought 3 pairs of gloves for different temps. This year, I had to replace two sets of my gloves. A & B got replaced and this is what I got and love A, Manzella Men’s Silkweight Windstopper Glove. This first pair is when it’s just starting to get cold. This next pair is what I wear probably the most of all of these. The B, Swix Star XC 100 Glove simply rock, lots of warm and flexibility. They have a special material on the top to cut the wind. These are the gloves I always have in my jacket and take care of my hands the majority of my shooting. When going to extremes like when the air temp hovers around zero of lower, I turn to ice climber gloves. These seem to change every other day, they are updated and outdated almost monthly. The pair I got last year are now gone, the closest are the C, Black Diamond Torrent Cold Weather Gloves. They do look bulky but I found them to work really well. They keep the digits warm, permit basic operation and ability to push some buttons. You can push all the buttons on the D4s for example. You can run a video camera with them.
My favorite though are ones my family gave me years ago for ultimate in cold weather protection. These gloves mittens I love to shoot with! Actually, they are custom made trapper mittens that are strictly for cold weather use.

How cold? Well, at 12degrees my hands were almost uncomfortably warm, not perspiring but almost too much warmth. Working in places like Yellowstone or the Arctic in the winter, these mittens are so perfect. Yeah, I can squeeze off the shutter, no, can’t work any other feature on the body. No, can’t buy these at REI. They are a two layer mitten, a heavy wool removable liner and outer Beaver fur. I just can’t wait to get out in the cold and put them to use! Thanks family!

Sharon & I were very fortunate that Jake made the drive down to spend Christmas with us. Many years ago before my mom passed away, she had handed down to jake a box of odd monies she had collected over the years. Some of it was from my dad and in this box, Jake found some Japanese Invasion Money. Jake had been checking into it over the last couple of months which lead him to wonder about just when and where his grandfather had picked it up. So we spent the day getting my dad’s slides (Kodachromes) out of archival storage and going through them. It was no easy process but oh man, what a ton of fun exploring which lead to more questions than answers.
One just has to look at one of my dad’s slide mounts to figure out why I’m so anal about image filing. Each mount has the role number, image number, date and subject meticulously written on everyone. So we went through the few slides of his we have (another part of the puzzle is to figure out where much of his slides went) and Jake wrote down all this info for each slide. And some of the images like the ones above I scanned (Nikon LS-5000 / Silverfast) in so Jake could take them home with him. My dad (1st row, far left) is here with his crew in front of a B-50, 25 Oct,’52 at Randolph AFB. We know that because it’s all written on the slide mount. Now I went and took a photo of Jake (Df / 24f1.4 AFS) at the light table to record the memory of family time during the holidays as well as a little history lesson. For those who never did it, this is a light table and this is how for two decades I sorted, edited and filed images. And this is truly what photography is all about, freezing time, creating memories so in this case, three generations can come together to share them decades later because holidays means family time.
