Blackbird Flock captured by Z 6II / 800f5.6

Flocks of Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes is what one expects to take when they are at Bosque. That’s what we come to photograph. Here at Bosque again, for my 23rd December visit, that’s what I expect. A decade or so back there was a giant flock of mixed blackbirds, Red-winged, Brewer, and Yellow-headed were here and I got a shot I just love. Haven’t seen them since until this year when there is the most joyous gathering of them. I’m talking over a thousand individuals flying in what many of us come to know as murmurations.
Photographed them for a moment or two yesterday morning but the background just didn’t help the story. Yesterday afternoon had the light and background but oh man, the wind was brutal! With the winds, I was low on the ground trying to get out of the biggest gusts but the gear was bouncing really well. Tried to get video of the huge flight of the flock but that yielded no results. I then turned to stills and had come success. But I didn’t get the one shot that says it all without my writing a caption. That will be the challenge for the week. The flight of the massive flock is mesmerizing and a joy to watch. But I want that photograph. And trying to get it will just add to the simple joys!
