“How do you decide to shoot vertical or horizontal?” is a question that is often asked. And for good reason! I can only answer this for my own photography. You will ultimately have to answer it for your own. Here though is another example of when I preferred horizontal for this scenario. One reason might be obvious, the other, not so much.

You might have noticed that the horizontal photo of the Harris’s Hawk looks bigger in the frame. This is so even when it’s the same size in both images. This is one reason you might prefer horizontal, makes a subject appear larger. Or, you might need more space and you can’t take a teleconverter off fast enough so you simply turn vertically. But the more important reason why I wanted horizontal is because vertically brightness is introduced in the top right corner. It pulls the eye from the hawk and that just doesn’t work for me.

Yep, we’re all getting out and back on the road with our cameras. We’re heading to the Oregon Coast 05-10 Sept, 2021 to photograph the southward shorebird migration and would love to have you join us. This is time for the forecasted peak of the birds moving south along the coast. This is also when the rarer shorebirds like Ruff and Hudsonian Godwit and Buff-breasted Sandpiper could appear. This is also when the kiddies are back in school. It’s simply the best time to be lying on the sand with the peeps having a great time with a camera! We’ll be based out of either Lincoln City or Bandon with flying into Portland, OR. The plan, spend the week lying on the sand photographing peeps :-)
