The window is so short especially when one is not home the whole time it’s open. After five years, all the planning on feeder placement, perch locations, and background shrubs, it started to come together this year. There is one part of the planning I seemed to have left out, time to be behind the lens to add it all up into a click. As you can see above, the background has more brown than yellow and orange. The Magpies have stuck around longer this year so photographing them was very much on my agenda. They cooperated but not my calendar. I’m grateful to get some clicks, but the color is slipping away.

The Wild Rose is in full fall color splendor, a great backdrop for the birds coming to our feeders. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon shooting out the door trying to get the chickadees in the color. Then I saw the male House Finch and the thought popped into my mind. House Finch is about the most common bird in North America but you rarely see photographs of it, because it’s so common. I focused on one branch with a bright background and waited. In a little while the male landed and you see the shot. Might be a real common species so it was fun finding the uncommon for the common.
