I know when the biggest challenge of the morning is finding the on button on the coffee maker at 04:30, it’s going to be a great day. At cell phone point there was only one cloud this morning and that’s all it took. Put the camera to 10,000k WB, dialed in -1 2/3 Exp Comp and went click. The color, the gradation, the simplicity of the click, I love it when landscape photography comes down to KISS!

Sunrise on Philmont Scout Ranch is always dramatic! The New Mexico landscape in its vastness and simplicity suck you in and wraps around the heart all its warmth. This morning from the Stockade, we looked out at the last sliver of the moon before its big show tomorrow. That’s when it will block the sun creating the “ring of fire”. It was our last morning on Philmont and it was grand, the whole week was which makes sayin goodbye hard to do!

The Stars Above

New Mexico skies captured by Z 8 / Fisheye

I was raised staring at the stars! Hard to remember a summer’s night when I was young that the blanket wasn’t thrown on the ground and we were on top of it watching the heavens above. Shooting stars, satellites, constellations and of course those twinkling lights then and now still grab my imagination. With the release of Photoshop 2024 and ACR 16, I went looking on the web to see if there was a better way of finishing the heavenly bodies I photographed last night from our photographic workshop on the Philmont Scout Ranch. Did you know there are about as many ways on the web to finish star photographs as there are stars in the sky? That really isn’t surprising as they do bring out the romantic in the most stoic person. That means there is no right or wrong to how you share your heavens because, that’s how they touch you and you want to share them. There is simply nothing more beautiful then the stars above!

Turning Back Time

Bison on Philmont captured by Z 8 / Z50f1.2

The Bison herd on the Philmont Scout Ranch is a very old string with DNA sought after for its purity. The Bison themselves don’t know anything about that. They just roam the vast landscape as they always have and it is vast! This ancient land is as it has always been and venturing out on it is like turning back time. We took to the range last evening to wander with one of the herds. It was magical with those New Mexico skies putting on their evening show. Golden Eagle soared past overhead, the grunts of the Bison and dust from the wallows, it just screamed going to Mode #17 Charcoal, getting down low and make a click. I love the shot, taking me back, burning back time!
