We are incredibly fortunate to be living at this time with the tools, techniques and passion we use to celebrate life! It seems really hard right now to turn the world off though in that pursuit. Not saying ignore it, but just turn the volume down or off by applying what it is we all do naturally. I’m suggesting that we find those moments that make us smile when behind the camera, one simple click, and share it and celebrate our good fortunes.
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to witness Old Faithful reach for the heavens hundreds of times. No two explosions of energy are ever the same. Last week, clouds on the western horizon darkened the sky in the background so the steam condensed in the cool air providing a natural drama. All that was required was to be there. It’s the perfect example I think of what we call should be doing with our photography right now. Shoot, share & celebrate!

12 Seconds Erases a Century

Black Pool and I go back a long ways, the first photo I had published from Yellowstone was of Black Pool. Its deep, blue waters always suck me in and my lens pointing down at its boiling colors. I’ve always gone to the pool with a long lens like the Z70-200f2.8 because there is so much humanity surrounding it, it required a long lens to see just nature. There is massive boardwalks on 50% of its circumfrence and I just don’t want them in my photograph. Yesterday I decided I wanted turn back the clock of time. I want to see and remember Black Pool as it was once seen by Bridger or earlier. Well, we can and it takes just a heartbeat.
I took a two image pano which ACR assembled in a click for me. You can see that image below. Then I wanted that boardwalk removed. We have the tool now to do that just as quickly. I brought the pano into Photoshop, selected the boardwalk and with Generative Fill, 12 seconds erases a century!

The Calm Before Winter

Being the last in the park before it’s closed for the season has tons of cool benefits from limited public to more critters. It also has one risk, weather! Yesterday was full of moody cloudy, saturated light and limited critters as they seem to be making their plans to head down slope. Today, the skies are cloudy and temps dropping 30 degrees. Tomorrow, they are saying nine inches of snow! Yep, winter is coming to the northern end of the Rockies tomorrow. Day seems to be the last day of fall, the calm before winter.
