Photoshop World is just a week out and we can’t wait. There simply is nothing better, funner or down right more energizing then PSW! I’ll be there doing all sorts of fun. The PreCon will be like NOTHIN we’ve ever done before but like normal, it was sold out the day it was posted. You can find me at the Image Wizards booth when the floor is open most of the time if you wanna ask any questions. I’ll also be in the Peachpit Theater Saturday @2 and in the Wacom booth (there is no rest for the wicked). And really early in the morning (go firgure), I’ll be teaching three classes.
Dang, I want to Get Started in Wildlife Photography!
If you read my book, Captured, you probably got disappointed when you read my statement, “If you want to play with the big boys, you gotta have 600mm!” But I started with a 400mm and that was my longest lens for my first 5 years. That focal length taught me all the main lessons I depend upon today to be successful. You have a basic DSLR and a 70-300 or a 100-400. I’m going to share with you all that my 400mm taught me, permitting me to get where I am today. These are all techniques, tricks and tips you can apply to your photography to get you way beyond “started in wildlife photography.”
The Blessings of the Pixel
You might have read or heard me say, “If I spend more than two minutes with an image in post, I will abandon it.” That might just make you scratch your head and ask one or two things. “How do you do that or how can I do that too?!” I’m going to take every minute of my hour to explain how I do this, which starts at the camera and ends when I click Save. This includes everything from arranging elements in the viewfinder (which most call composition) to metering to drama to Curves, Color Efex Pro and the end point of sharing that image.
The Art of Aviation
There is an art of flying metal. These speed machines that defy gravity bend light just as gracefully. But how do you take these gas fueled machines and make them a piece of art? This is basic photography of light, exposure, focal length, moving the viewer’s eye around the image, manipulating it while you tell the story. The subject might be “just” a plane, but the techniques, tricks and final results must make the heart fly. Don’t let the title fool you. There is a lot more to this than just airplanes, we are talking romance!

I’ve made many a joke about not sticking my ass in the air to photograph wildflowers, what my botanist/biologist friends call “belly rubbers.” While I do shoot them when I have too, this isn’t the such an instance. Mules ears are a BIG wildflower, I don’t have to set down on my knees for them. With the right winter and spring, the entire hillsides in the Eastern Sierra can be covered in these which makes even a wildflower neophyte like myself make a click or two of them. That’s just one of the subjects you might have time with at our Mono Lake Weekend.
Now why did I even stop to look let alone photograph these wildflowers? Those with me asked the same thing. The reason, the color of course! The top image, the Mules Ears were right next to the creek so the challenge of getting a sharp image (slow shutter speed for water, blossom moving in breeze) was a challenge. And then the yellow against the slate gray water, killer color contrast. the bottom photo, getting close with a really wide lens and finding the one blossom that to me had “attitude” what a different kind of challenge. If these types of challenges along with the beauty of Mono Lake strike your imagination, come on up to our Mono Lake Weekend and together, we can photograph wildlflowers :-)

Just a couple of Love Notes
Hi Moose and Sharon,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank both of you for a very well run Photoshop for Shooters class last weekend. Thank you Moose for imparting such great tips and techniques and thank you Sharon for keeping us all hydrated.
I don’t call myself a photographer; I think that should be reserved for those making a living with their cameras. But I do enjoy the creative process and challenges of making clicks both behind the lens and in front of my computer display. And I can already see a difference in my finished images as a result of your presentation.
Prior to attending Photoshop for Shooters, the only other classes I had attended were Kelby Training sessions when they have come to Hartford; one by Scott and the other given by Ben Wilmore. And while they were very well done, I learned more from you in the first hour.
Like a few others on Google Plus, I’ll throw my 2 cents in for restaurant recommendations in Lake Placid: The View at Mirror Lake Inn and The Brown Dog Cafe and Wine Bar. My wife and I enjoyed both when we were there in 2010. The photo I used as the ‘Stump Moose’ photo was taken just a few feet from The Brown Dog.

I wanted to take the time and express my appreciation to you and Moose for a great weekend in the Photoshop for Shooters class. It was not only entertaining but very informative. Moose did an excellent job of leading us through his workflow and camera settings as well as looking for the light. I’d highly recommend this class to anyone who is looking for a clear and concise weekend to learn more about Photoshop and shot in an amazing environment.
