On Friday, Adorama & Nikon hosted Sharon, Stephanie, myself and some really great folks to a shoot in Central Park. This is our third one this past year and 2nd in the park and it was simply, GREAT! Now I debated for the last couple of days just how I was going to present all the images. Rather than presenting them all in a slideshow (which makes the images small), I decided to post them all day long here with little stories.
We started off our day with dark clouds which, not too long after this click was made, sent us for cover for a little while during the down pour. With the soft, diffused light, I headed to this canopy lined walk in the North Woods. I used the center AF sensor to help me line up the symmetry (the best the garden could provide) and went click. I took the shot thinking I would go black and white but when I saw the variances in the green in ACR, I stayed color. Good start to a great day!

With the clouds providing a rather even, flat light, I pointed my lens down in the depths of the canyon. I set the camera to Vivid and underexposed 1.5 stops to crank up the color and looked. I like this photo, at first glance it looks as if someone put the slide upside down in the projector. Then you stare at it long enough, it rights itself. Na, not printing it up and putting it on the wall, but it put a smile on my face and for that reason alone, I like it.

The sun went up into the deep clouds and there is stayed. While it had some character, the clouds just wouldn’t let it come through. What little you see here just wasn’t over anything interesting. I just hate that, when you have a pattern in the clouds but nothing in the foreground to go with them. Oh well, time to point the lens somewhere else.

Yeap, the light at Dead Horse Point showed the promise of some real character but no sooner then the promise came, the promise left. That is the way it can happen so you have two options, leave and east breakfast, or wait to see what life brings. I like to wait and see what life brings. Often you get rewarded.

Yeap, the hundreds of shooters left the arch after the “light was gone,” so Joe & I just walked right up to where we wanted to stand, looked at each other, said pretty sweet light and with zero compensation dialed in, just went clicked, smiled the smile of satisfaction and went to have a great breakfast. How sweet it was!

Like moths to a flame, I head towards the light and sometimes, like a guided missal. Mesa Arch has been always very good to me with some of my best ideas being generated by its magic. This morning was no different.

I wanted a starburst, but just not any old “close down the aperture” kind. At the same time I had a huge range of light. So I had a “What If” thought run through my mind and when I wonder an idea or concept, I now know to follow them. Most of the time they go down in flames, well into the trash at least but this time, I like the results. Now, if I can repeat it, I’ll be happy with the technique and it will be worth sharing. For the moment, we can just enjoy the magic of light!
