Oh The Power!

Two Image pano of Philmont Scout Ranch captured by Z 9 / Z24-120

While we were high and dry, someone was going to get really drenched this evening! Standing out on the point, the view looking over Philmont Scout Ranch is simply gorgeous! It is never, ever the same to the point that, we went up there three times to shoot over five days. The pano does a good job expressing the vast and gorgeous view and a pano I’ve taken a number of times over the years. On this evening though, the power that was before us truly caught my imagination. While the Z 9 was still set in B&W, I switched out the Z24-120 (love this lens!) to the Z400f4.5 w/Z1.4x (just love this combo) to capture the power in that thunderhead. I simply love that raw, natural power!

The Anti-Fall Color

Fall Color, Philmont Scout Ranch, NM captured by Z 30 / Z16-50

It probably seems almost like sacrilege to find fall color only to tell its story in B&W. But there are times when the scene’s drama is more than the fall color, color, expressed in a photo. It’s those times I like to turn to B&W. Such was the case this morning at Lover’s Leap. It started with being with the greatest group of folks to be out in nature with in the first place. In the dark, we pilled out of the Suburbans and gathered at the back of the one with the hot coffee and breakfast sandwiches hot from the kitchen. As the glow in the east grew, one by one cameras were picked up and all went on their personal journey to tell its story. This morning I picked up the Z 30 w/Z16-50, placed it in Monochrome as the drama of the location was more than the fall color. We each have to find that answer just keep in mind it’s our memory so we can preserve it any way we desire. It’s the sharing to the rest of the world we need to think about others understanding that memory.

Finding Gold!

The Aspens of Baldie Town at 10k feet captured by Z 9 / 8-15Fish

With snow falling just a few days prior to our arrival, the fall color burst to color. We’re just off the Santa Fe Trail on Philmont Scout Ranch exploring these gorgeous mountains with our cameras. This morning we drove up Baldie Mtn (12k foot peak) to Baldie Town at 10k. It literally took your breath away! With a great group of folks, I’m not sure what we’re doing more shooting or laughing. This was a simple lesson on walking off the road two feet, pointing the lens up, closing the aperture down all the way to squeeze the sun and celebrate fall. What a glorious day, finding gold!
