It was one of those great mornings, Jake and I had the ramp to ourselves and the light rewarded us for greeting it at the start of a new day. We were simply walking around shooting some statics the day after the Wings Over Houston show was over. I was cruising light, just had the Df / 18-35AFS working with just three aircraft. The sun was out briefly at sunrise and then went behind the clouds. About forty minutes later, we saw the clouds start to break ever so little but it was enough to set us in motion.
You see, there are very few things you MUST know in photography, at the top of the list is the promise of light. We see light all the time and to some extent we take it for granted. But those special moments, often light has to smack us between the eyes before we frame it up in the viewfinder. And that works most of the time, in fact, we kinda depend on it for making our photos special. But there are other times we must imagine the promise of light to make those photos. The most obvious application of this is when using flash, when we have to use a canned source of light to make the photo special. On this morning, we saw the promise of the light as the hole in the clouds moved towards the sun, we saw the promise so then the challenge was finding the subject. We lucked out with two different ones who’s timing was perfect. All I had to do was run to get into position and then make the click. So as you’re out shooting, let your imagination run wild not only with the subject, but the promise of light.
