Yeah, Tuesday was a day I was up in the air and loving every moment of it. This gorgeous P-51D “Sizzlin Liz” was so much fun to photograph. My good friend Dennis, the pilot of the T6 I’m in is good friends with Ted who was more then happy to take to the air for some photography. Air to Air photography is not only incredibly fun, it’s a heck of a challenge. So to encourage you to take this up, I’ll be posting all day some trivia to help you get up in the air.

The ISAP conference last month is already a mental blur. I haven’t even been able to process and print any of the images let alone get them in the iPhone. Then comes a message on my Facebook account from the Capt of one of the B1-B Lancers that was part of the RF event (SOOO glad Stephanie set that up now). He’s based in TX and wanted to know if I had any photos of him. Just so happen, I really do have a photo of him (above) and of course his plane. The prints are now on their way to him and hopefully sometime in the future, we can meet and do some more image making of him and his plane. Dang, it’s such a small and cool world!

Posting this image of E/A-6B Prowlers is a little delayed because a compartment had to be closed. The Navy didn’t do it, Stephanie did! Photographed out on the line of Nellis, the sensitivity of the instruments under those panels isn’t to be put in the public space. I’m always amazed the access we’re permitted in such conditions, it’s a privilege. The lineup of noses, the light on the canopies and the activity just grabbed my attention and had to make the click. Knowing Stephanie’s amazing skill in Photoshop is what permitted me to make the click, knowing the panel could be closed and the image shared.

We had just arrived at Edwards AFB and stopped at the museum for a heartbeat waiting for our bus taking us out to the flight line. There was a unique looking A-10 parked there (rotting there better describes the situation) so I walked over and read the sign, “…only twin-seat A-10.” Supposedly it’s a A-10A conversion, the only one ever made. That being the case and being parked at Edwards where I won’t be getting back to anytime soon, a click had to be made. But yuck, it couldn’t have been a worse scenario!

The bus was leaving so if I was going to make a click, it would have to be later. Well, we cameback affording me a couple of minutes to make the photo. Some clouds came in but the light had gotten harder. No matter, I made the click knowing how I would finish it to pull something out of nothing. Back in the DD, I used one click HDR to start and then Nik’s Monday Morning to finish off the photo.
Na, it’s not how I would have liked to photograph the A-10 in the perfect world, but that’s not what was afforded me. I had the option of no click or this click. No click wasn’t an option so I then made the best I could of the situation. I’ll look at the image over and over again fine tuning the processing, but this is close to the final. This is a good reason why I do play with so many different techniques, lenses and combination. There are simply times where you’ve gotta make lemonade from lemons.

Why am I smiling like the cat that ate the mouse? Well, my dear friend Scott Diussa photographed me in pig heaven out between runways at Nellis photographing to my hearts content warbirds of about every description. The ISAP conference in my book was a huge success and I had a great time. I got to spend time with great friends, Richard, Dave, Richard, Bill, Scott and make new friends and take photos too! Wow, life should always be so good. How much fun did I have?
