In fact this was the weather for the majority of the day. Right now I have to be careful to not brush my mustache or else my keyboard is covered in red dust! The pile of camera waiting back on the bed for me to clean is nasty! That’s right, even with the clouds of dust, the red rain that fell (because of all the dust in the sky), I kept on shooting. It was Great! Now the video crew wasn’t that thrilled with the shooting process, but they loved the results. Dang, this is fun!

After pulling an all nighter doing star trails (which turned our freakin cool), we started a little after sunrise with breakfast and then scouting. This place is just AMAZING! The photographs I’ve seen of Monument Valley don’t all seem to do it justice so that’s my challenge and it’s a whopper of a challenge. Part of solving that challenge for myself is getting to know the place and to know the place, you have to know the folks who call it home, the Navajo. So, I spent a few hours today with the Jackson’s who live at the bottom of the Valley on the 17mile drive. Got to know Albert real well and what you see here is his office everyday. It was a very special time learning about how the Navajo regard MV and a huge challenge to bring that out in my images and videos we’re filming. You’ll here more about all of that as the week goes one so stayed tuned!

Yeap, Sharon & made it to Monument Valley for the first time today. This was our first view and it didn’t disappoint. We’ve seen many a beautiful image made here which has always pulled us in. We are very fortunate to be here with perfect photo weather and spring green just coming up.

Couldn’t have planned better if we wanted to. Even better, we’re here with a film crew from Kelby Training as we’re creating a two part Romancing The Landscape series. So you’ll be able to see all the successes and failures and explore this gorgeous place for the first time right along side us. It’s going to be a great week, well blog clicks as I go.

The highnoon light, its contrast and simple one image HDR make this stuff so easy it’s fun!

Then I started to see faces in the junk. I let it suck me in one or two clicks and then I shake out of it because that tends to be a slippery slope.

My shootin is out stripping my finishing it would seem at times. Photos I take just for the fun of shooting, just to record the moment tend to hit the back burner more and more. This image is one I rescued from the back burner. It was taken a couple of weeks back when I was in NE working with the cranes on the Platte. Cruising the country side lookin at history is something Mark & I enjoy. We passed this junkyard last year but we didn’t stop. This time though I wanted to stop to play with one image HDR and the 24f1.4AFS. I’ve got a couple more to throw up today, hope you enjoy them as much as the fun we had working the “junk.”

The winds that greeted us in the morning never stopped, in fact they kept building as the day went on. We battled our way out to Badwater and some other Death Valley favorites and while there was a couple of cool pics to make, it wasn’t really fun. Then came the evening and Stovepipe Wells.
