What a great day! The folks venturing through MT with us are great, dead tired but really great! We went shooting in the snow this afternoon is this great town, Nevada City, the one I eluded to earlier in the week. Joe was showing some images this afternoon and talking about a “newish” technique with the Nikon SB-900 (did you see that Joe blogged HOURS after taking a landscape photo, a landscape photo? WOW!). It got Kevin and me a thinkin….
We hit the town and started with a safe subject, a train luggage cart to try the new technique. We then moved on to what you see above. What’s cool is, it was snowing when we took the photo! There’s no sunset, no shadows. Using Joe’s technique, we made the shadow right out of the gate. Thanks Joe! Kevin & I were just starting our third photo when the call went out for lighting demo. That’s when Joe works his magic live and on location. This time, Joe lit up an entire train with 4 SB’s and used our son Jake as the conductor. Well, we couldn’t miss that now, could we? The photo, well I took it since it was my son but it’s Joe’s shot so he gets to publish it first. But it was very cool and a great lesson.

There are rewards in this world of photography that well, you simply don’t see coming. This guy Kevin first coming on a safari with me and then becoming one of my dearest friends and then having a ranch outside of Bozeman for us to shoot at. Who’d a thunk it? This is Kevin’s cousin Lyle who is a real life cowboy working the family ranch that has been in existence since the land was settled.

And this is his wife Mert, real life “cowgirl.” She can ride!

The first day is over and is on the books and we’re back for Monday night assist. It’s been a really good day with some really nice shooters. We headed to a very favorite place of mine this afternoon to shoot, the Stockyard in Bozeman. I just started to get into the flow of the place again when McNally came up with this really cool flash demo that just sucked me in.

Here are two photos though I did get to finish before getting sucked into the magic that is Joe’s flash. You get a hint of the place and its period feel. I saw the place in that kind of time light so composed everything I shot for B&W which I did in post using Silver Efex Pro. I’ve got to run, off to help folks. Hope you enjoy another small slice of MT.

We had a great, cloudy, cold, moody morning start for our MT DLWS event. It was perfect weather for our subject, Hyalite Creek. This is the same locale where we film our Kelby Training Landscape videos. Here’s how the photo was captured.

This photo was captured in the same way. What’s key is “bracketing for effect” which means taking photos at various shutter speeds to capture the “blur” you desire and shooting many frames at the final shutter speed to capture the feel you desire.

The DLWS family, Joe, Laurie, Kevin, Sharon, Jake, Drew, and I are all back together causing havoc, this time in a new state. So with all in tow, off we went this afternoon scouting. We went to one of my favorite places in the state to shoot. Where is that? Well, you’ll have to stay tuned this week to discover that.

This corner of an old Pullman rail car really grabbed my attention. It was the orange colored paint peels that originally got hold of me. The above photo is where I started but with nothing being squared to nothing, my original thoughts went out the window so I turned to Infrared. The bottom photo is more of a hint of what I was thinking but it’s just a small portion of the upper photo.

Than there is the basics. The aging process of the Montana plains brings wood to life. This old home is just a small sampling of the character that is born from life here. It’s very unique and special. But just like the train car, nothing is square.
