We started off our day on the Madison with a glorious, glorious sunrise! The wonders of Yellowstone surprise me every moment I’m in the park, they always seem to be new or amazing. It was great this AM to share some of those wonders with the new friends we’ve made at Base Camp. It’s great to see, after such an experience nothing but big smiles! The best part, the day has just begun.

The day was a blur, heck, the computer screen right now is a blur! We started out at truly one of my favorite places, Jenne Farm with our good friend Sam. The photo gods we really good to the DLWS gang providing us perfect light for the morning shoot. This photo is a straight shot taken in Vivid with -1.5 comp, the combo bringing out the color and drama.

It’s very rewarding to be out with students who can’t wait to get out shooting and then venture any distance required to get the photo. And sometimes in their pursuit to the photograph, they become the photograph.
Now I know I’m tired, but I don’t think this is how the saying goes.

We had an amazing Participant Slideshow tonight containing 408 images produced from 146GB! On behalf of the DLWS staff, we want to thank ALL the folks who joined us for making Vermont so special. Now it’s time to hit the road again, off to the Big Apple.

Quite blurry eyed, I returned with the very energetic DLWS gang to a staff scouting favorite, Middletown Springs. The color was better, especially waiting to sunset to use the best color filter in the world, smog (with a little underexposure thrown in).

You’ll probably get tired of me saying this, but it’s true, it was another gorgeous morning in Vermont! We headed out to the summer home of Calvin Coolidge. It’s a great little village nestled in the hills of VT.
We’ve ventured here twice before with DLWS but it never had the fall color we had this morning. I was torn between doing the stereotypical fall color shots and more site oriented subjects.

The early morning coolness was the great background color for the top photo. The yellow fall colors fly out of the image against the blue. The bottom photo I used the black of contrast to make the yellow sizzle. In both cases, to make the color pop and background color was used that would make the mind’s eye see just the fall color.

All during the highnoon session the hail pounded on the roof yet when it came time to go shooting, the sun was out and great puffies passed overhead.
We first ventured to Echo Lake for a great start. We finished up in the town of Weston, a favorite of ours for many reasons. One is this mill. Now this image represents a new technique I’m experimenting with in my pursuit of pushing the photographic envelope.
A large influence on the use of this technique (which is not ready for prime time) comes from wanting to bring to the photograph more of the romance I feel from certain scenes. To explain it more, take a moment to enjoy this slice of Vermont serenity.

To say we hit the color is an UNDERSTATEMENT! We went to one of my favorite locales this AM, Sleepy Holow and it was great. The color, the fog, the farm itself were just spectacular.
Shooting for me was relatively simple because I stayed focus on the color and fog.

To preserve the airness of this photo as well as shadow detail, I used my five image-HDR technique. While not the text book application of the technique, I do love the feel it preserved from the morning.
