The locales say it’s peak color, the timing is perfect for a great show. We can after a solid day of scouting attest that this is all true. It is gorgeous!
We started our morning at Jenne Farm. Besides having the greatest maple syrup, it’s an idealic place with the greatest dog, Sam. You might recognize from movies like Forest Gump.
We checked out many of our favorite places today to decide where we’ll be taking our DLWS participants this coming week. We were incredibly thrilled to see one with the right amount of color in just the right places. I took a while for the fog of travel to wear off and the techniques of shooting fall color to come to light. It’s going to be a grand week!

Remove a tree, bring on fall color and now you can see what I saw in my heart at the time of capture. I’m just getting psyched for next week’s DLWS event in VT.
And when I was shooting boats, I needed direction so I just looked up.

The finishing shoot of our DLWS San Juan event was just gorgeous. We first went to a grove overlooking Friday Harbor where amazing light streamed through the canopy. This is a 7 image composite to hold the 11stops of light in the scene.
Then we headed over to South Beach to catch some great waves and nice clouds.

From out of nowhere this killer shoot comes to us! No, seriously, I didn’t expect much from the morning as it was raining when we left the lodge and still raining when we got out of the cars. The gray skies opened and character came to them and the area. It’s just like it was scripted.

I started off in B&W mode, working far away with the 200VR and then moving in closer to grab details. But there was more to be had then just the obvious.

We had a lovely shoot tonight at the Lime Kiln Pt Lighthouse. This is the locale we shot previously prior to DLWS starting. We took the gang back there tonight and had a most excellent shoot. I wanted to add something to the shoot so Sharon did some producing and found us a “salty old seafarer.” Jim is this really nice 84 gentleman who fit the bill perfectly. All the participants were able to photograph Jim by plugging into the flashes we’d set up.
The lighting is very simple, a single SB-800 working CLS, firing through a Lastolite panel about four feet away from Jim. He was great, working with us for 2 hours, steady as a rock the whole time. We almost pulled out a mirror to stick under his nose to see if he was still with us. Seriously, no one ever saw him blink! Thanks Jim.
