With the end of the holiday weekend, there was only one place to head to shoot this evening, the docks! The fisherman are coming in with their catch and cleaning them. With the scraps come the birds and in particular the Florida Brown Pelican. I was bummed I missed the total primary tips on the right. Gotta work on that.

Ah, to wiggle the ol toes in the warm Florida sands, wasn’t going to happen today. We went out to neither sun or fog but overcast. With those conditions, it was off to Ding Darling. The third lagoon had the Roseattes, not in the greatest scenario but still, they are Roseattes. It was a challenging shoot with minimal light, distracting foreground, birds not in their finest plumes, but shooting it was none the less. It required the 600VR & TC-17e with HSC to get this shot of a single bird on this cool perch. I was testing the D3x in HSC just to see what I would get. It’s not a viable option for the price IMHO.

When I framed this up, all I could say to myself are the words of the Double-crested Cormorant, “Would you marry me….please?”

Had to get out of the office, from behind the computer and start thinking about how I wanted to test the D3x for myself. Looking for detail subjects when everything is covered with snow is a challenge.

I headed up to one of my favorite places and started walking, only to find more and more snow. I then walked back to the truck and looked down at my feet.

While I worked this subject, the leading edge of the storm, which still hasn’t hit, started to sneak over the crest. I didn’t find “the” subject I wanted for my testing, but I find some Moose Cam entertainment for you. Take a look.

We kinda took the day off, I spent the morning putting together a little video (105MB) of our Yellowstone DLWS. If you watch it, you’ll see how and where some of the images I blogged were taken. You’ll hear the sounds of Yellowstone, the wind, water, steam and boiling earth. And, you’ll find out why Joe is cocking his head (and it’s not from what he learned this week). For your enjoyment….

It might have been the warm temps, might have been the excitement of not being in the office, could have even been McNally having an adverse effect on me, whatever it was, I was in a artsy fartsy mood this week. This is by far the more traditional type of art from snow, the wind blown sculpture created by snow on a rock. The trick here for me is to find this “art’ in the shade so the shadows are real soft then finishing in the digital darkroom using white point/black point. Then there is the untraditional…

This is Patrick Richard Harry, a ~really~ nice guy who was a participant at our Yellowstone DLWS (we will be returning in 2011). At first introductions, I warned him he would be a model, but I never thought by me. We were at Fountain Paint Pots when a minor irruption occurred and Patrick was standing right there. The rest was real simple. I just lined up his hair with the steam, stopped giggling and clicked. Both images though have a couple of things in common, shape, color and whimsy. Just havin fun!
And speaking about art, check out the bottom image in Jake’s latest posting…WOW!

Wow….day’s like this is why I love being a photographer! We visited two of my favorite locales in Yellowstone today. In the morning we were in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with Lower Yellowstone Falls being are main focus.

We ventured to both the North and South Rim. This images is from the South Rim, Artist Point. This is a classic spot that calls for a longer lens to compact the scene and aid in eliminating some unwanted elements. We had an overcast day so White Point / Black Point was need to bring out the color of this beautiful canyon.

Mark Kettenhofen from Nikon NPS brought with him the new 45 PC-E and today was my first day to shoot with it. I naturally tried some of my “miniatures” with it. I’ll post more on the lens and what I think shortly. Saying it was fun thought is just a hint.
