We had a lovely shoot tonight at the Lime Kiln Pt Lighthouse. This is the locale we shot previously prior to DLWS starting. We took the gang back there tonight and had a most excellent shoot. I wanted to add something to the shoot so Sharon did some producing and found us a “salty old seafarer.” Jim is this really nice 84 gentleman who fit the bill perfectly. All the participants were able to photograph Jim by plugging into the flashes we’d set up.

The lighting is very simple, a single SB-800 working CLS, firing through a Lastolite panel about four feet away from Jim. He was great, working with us for 2 hours, steady as a rock the whole time. We almost pulled out a mirror to stick under his nose to see if he was still with us. Seriously, no one ever saw him blink! Thanks Jim.

DLWS San Juan Day2 AM

We woke up to a gorgeous morning. That might sound wonderful but we were all set to shoot a foggy, moody morning in a graveyard with a model. So we went to plan B, Friday Harbor. It’s not that we suffered, not by any means, but it meant at least for me I had to work past “not seeing” subject to seeing photographs.

In fact, I had to reach down and think about what I wanted to do with my images. It meant pushing my limited PS knowledge to come up with the dock shot. It’s another subject to think about, learn to come up with a little better image next time.

It has been one heck of a day! I’m so late getting blogged because I still had so many cool images I like from this morning AM’s shoot, I just got through this evening photos. We’re very fortunate to have Joe Sliger, our own Mr Wacom with us because he use to live on San Juan Island.

Tonight he took to a forest where elves surely live. This grove had its own very unique character. Perhaps it was the graveyard, perhaps it was the view of all the surrounding islands from the top of its knoll, perhaps it was just all the energy from photographers thoroughly enjoying photography. Whatever it was, I thank it for all the images it gave up to us.

These images were finished by lighting the forest floor in NX2 and polishing the colors with Color Efex’s Tonal Contrast. More great stuff to come, I can’t wait!

DLWS San Juan 1st AM #1

Oh man, what a morning! The weather opened up and the light just kissed us this morning! We started at 06:00 making sure all cameras were set, questions answered so when the sun would hopefully arrive in 30min, we’d be good to go.

We only venture three minutes from our lodge to the docks this morning. Getting up early, being in the right place and the right time and a little luck is all that was required to make the images. Life doesn’t come any sweeter!

Both of these images were taken with the same lens and finished the same way in NX2 & CS4. Combined, it took a minute to finish these images. Life is good.

Then came the last day

With the change in the weather this morning, I changed plans and headed to where I thought we’d have the best possible photo opps. Heck, it’s Friday the 13th.

So we headed to the sheep and hoped they would come when they should. We lucked out, they came down and it wasn’t just the ewe group but five rams, three with decent sized curls.

And while you might think all was copesetic, it was anything but a few times. The biggest ram chased off the younger ones a couple times with full blast head butts.

This is right after one of the head butts with the younger ram, I don’t know, saying it gives? I’d never seen behavior like this so not sure what’s going on. Glad I had the opportunity to see and photograph it.

After a marathon boardroom session, it was back out to wildlife photography and since it is my Base Camp, we went to one of my favorite places for the afternoon.

Potter Marsh despite the wind was as active as usual. The wind while buffeting our lenses pretty good, stopped the Arctic Terns dead in their tracks making capturing flight shots pretty darn easy.

This is why they hovered, they were coming in to the nest, bringing in nesting material and fish to the nest. it was great photography, great fun and in my mind, a great ending to our Alaska Base Camp. Want to thank Jorgen, Dave, Chris, Rob, Fredrik and Jarred for making it a great week!
