We’ve seen this unfold quite a bit of late, it even happened literally right in front of me when I was in the Hide! This is the first time though I’ve gotten any glass on the action and this time I was shooting through the window. Argh! The mass number of flickers at The Ranch in the winter brings in predators from everywhere. We have at least two Sharpies, pretty sure a pair of Coops and one, Goshawk. We find piles of feathers every day so we know they are picking off the flickers but once they make the hit, they are super sensitive. Standing in the house looking out, walking up to a window for a better look makes them flush. This time, I at least got the tripod with the rig to the window. So while it’s progress, it was taken through the window. But we are getting closer.

A Delightful 21 degree Start

The day and New Year started just as it ended here yesterday, cool and snowy. Sunset last night found me focused on the activity in our crabapple tree, the Mountain & Black-capped Chickadees, Red & White-breasted Nuthatches, siskins, flickers, and the always fun but annoying Sharp-shinned Hawk. Sunrise found me right back where I stopped last year (twelve hours ago) as I still had one shot in mind. With the falling snow and 21-degree temps, the shot I want was a long shot, the chickadees feeding on the crabapple fruits. The issue is, that the fruit is frozen at that temp. WB was set at A2, ISO 1600, and I was focused just a tad past my minimum 14ft MFD. I had a clear shot of where I wanted them to land but that wasn’t to be. So them I put my attention on a few perches with a little color in the background like you see here. And if you’re wondering, sunset will find me right back in the same place working on the shot, it’s a delightful 21 degree start.

These little guys along with their cousins fill our feeders in the winter. While we have more and more nesting pairs each spring, each individual seems a tad unique. This particular White-breasted loves, just loves to hang with its much bigger cousin, the Northern Flicker. Not sure if it’s for the protection of its company, perhaps keeping a would-be suitor away, or simply likes them, but that is where I see it when I’m in the hide. But it’s this pose they all take that captivates me as they cruise the bark looking for a morsel. Great little bird, good company, love them White-breasted!
