Calibrite – New Devises & Profiler!
Calibrite today released their latest Profiler and it does make a difference! Along with the newly released calibration devices, they have uped the precision in calibration so our eyes can better work their magic at the monitor! What’s new, why update? Those are great questions, let me see if I can put it simply because there is a whole lot of color science and management involved and during class, my eyes tend to glass over taking it all in.
In a nutshell, this version supports the new SL and HL calibration devices as well as allowing the HL devices to provide a P3 sized gamut for Apple XDR displays. I found messing with a old Windows box, it produced a “cleaner” profiler permitting me to see more info in highlights and shadows. And a really nice snap on my new Macs.
When it comes to finishing images, I use my eyes and not numbers in the process. This system I use, which is based on shooting for the subject and finishing for the light, it is essential that the monitor is accurately calibrated so the very subtle moves I make translates to the finished image. This is the first reason why I calibrate the iMac M1 every Tuesday morning and the M2 MacBook Pro every other Wednesday morning. The second and most important reason I calibrate is for consistent content year after year after year.
As you can see, I use the Display Plus HL for these two computers and along with the new profiler. Benro’s Mach3 – Seriously Nice!
Benro’s TMA27C Mach3 Tripod
With my find and love for the Benro Mammoth Tripod & Wildlife Head, I have done a deeper dive into the Benro line. I’ve long wanted a incredibly stable travel tripod and with all my searching I came up short until I tried the Benro TMA27C Mach3. OMG, what a tripod! Weighing at 3lbs, its stats say it can hold a 30lbs load. I don’t know anything about that but what I do know, it holds the Z 9 / Z400f4.5 with Z1.4x and permits me to do a silky smooth pan on bird and planes (what I was using it for this past weekend) with ease! Collapsed it’s only 24.5″ in length so I travel with it with the head attached in my checked luggage. I love that! It is a three leg section tripod with one leg detaching to become a monopod. Its height as you see pictured here is 64″. The most important attribute to me is its small package growing to the perfect size and support. This past weekend it easily fit in the cargo hold for the flight into the splashin. That might not sound like much, but the hatch size is small, the compartment shallow so making that angle to insert very tight. Then I used it to shoot slow motion video of flight operations. It nailed that with killer stability on the grass for smooth pans. I’ve really gotten hooked on Benro so I’ve divin even deeper into their line. I foresee posting more goodness from these brilliant engineers!

The Z180-600f5.6-6.3 – Simply Brilliant!

It is so exciting, Nikon keeps on giving us the best tools, the Z 8 and now the Z180-600f5.6-6.3! This “small” BIG zoom will transform your photography without wiping out your wallet. A MFD of just over 7 feet at 600mm, I see it as a marvelous lens for anyone in wildlife photography. All of this in a 12.5″ package, I mean, just barely a foot long. Wowzers! It is packed with all sorts of goodness from ED elements, VR and a tripod foot that is removable. I have not had the good fortune yet to see the lens but I can’t wait. What a lens for wildlife and aviation! Congrats Nikon, you keep bringing the hits to the Z Family!!!
