“What’s it like to shoot Air-to-Air at our Air2Air Workshop?” “Was you ass really hanging out?” “How much did you shoot with the D3x compared to the D3s?” “Can anybody shoot air-to-air?” These are just some of the questions I’ve received in the last week with all my aviation postings.

Well the Moose Cam was going the whole time during our flights and after nine hours of editing (I learning some more to produce a better video), I have a short that hopefully brings some of the excitement, thrill and heart pumping exhilaration this shot brought me!At the same time I hope to infect a few more and share some of what I’ve learned shooting air-to-air. Enjoy!

My good bud Jeff Snyder at Adorama not only got the new Nikon P7000 in my hands fast, but helped me learn some of its features.

One reason why I wanted it is because of its video, it’s sweet! Then Jeff supplied me with the needed hot shoe ballhead overnight (because I lost my old ones) so I could bring to you video from our Air2Air Workshop.

And just as fast as it started, it ended. Time with aircraft seems to be fleeting, they come and go quickly. No sooner then our Air2Air Workshop begin it ended with Fifi taking off. But not into the sunset but in the worst light of the day.

The camera was in Shutter Priority, the shutter speed at /90 to get the prop blur, Exp Comp was -1 and I just shot. Yeap, the light was hard, the background most of the time sucked but I love every shot. That doesn’t come from anything other then a love for the aircraft and all that is represented by her flying past.

And of course I know that this will not be the last time I photograph Fifi or a B-29. It’s was too easy to put pressure on one’s self and photography and if there is one thing I have finally learned, if there is meant to be another opportunity to photograph something in life, then it will happen. And if not, then it just makes that moment you did get that much sweeter as life goes by. So for now, I thank Fifi for the memories and look forward to our next encounter!

Fifi is the only flying B-29 in the world right now and it just happened to be making a four day stop on its tour in Phoenix. So we ended our Air2Air Workshop by heading over toe Deer Valley where is was coming in. Most know of the B-29 because it’s what delivered the Atom Bomb to end WWII.

It was great to see all the folks turn out to see Fifi. The CAF does a great job preserving and sharing our aviation history with the public. I have a personal attachment for the B-29 because my father fly in the nose of one during WWII and Korea. Jake said it best when he first saw Fifi…”And I thought the B-17 was big!”

Our last plane, #9 of our air-to-air was this gorgeous V-77 Stinson Gullwing. This is one freakin gorgeous plane! As you can see, we had a couple of moments of the Bamboo Bomber with the Gullwing and then the Bomber went back to base and we flew an orbit with the Gullwing. The light at this point sucked and that really bummed me out because the plane is freakin gorgeous! I do like the last shot here when the Gullwing went over an orange grove. Oh, I’m very grateful we were able to photograph all these planes but being the kinda photographer I am, just want things perfect. Good thing we’re going back!
