I feel pretty darn comfortable with Photomatic Pro 4.01 and 7 image HDR now. Both of these images which match what I saw and felt pretty damn close through the magic of really good math!

Yeah, it would have been really easy to whack out the colors with HDR, I could have made the limited glow really dominate the photograph. I could have taken the foreground and made it look like it was lit with 50000 watts of flash but that’s just now how I see our landscape, especially this morning. And all of that doesn’t really mean dittly squat! No matter how you use any particular technique, HDR or anything else, make it match how YOU see and feel and it will have been done to perfections!

We woke up to the start of a major storm, Mammoth had major winds and rain, not the best of conditions for photography. Definitely not the best conditions to have any fun. So we headed towards the east, away from the storm. I took the gang to a spot I’ve never taken folks before, a special locale when the clouds are talking to us, the photography is amazing! What you see in the distance are the White Mtns and Nevada. mtc

With the light slipping down, we headed down the road to another grove of fall color. But this time the grove wasn’t so close. It was long lens time. That doesn’t seem like any big deal.

Not until you look through the viewfinder and see your shutter speed at ISO 100 was 1/4! And, the wind was blowing! Not a problem, just shoot keeping your finger on the hammer.

Shooting a bunch of frames just lets the law of averages catch up so you at least get one sharp frame. When it comes to framing up the elements, I looked for color, texture and shape. It was a lot of fun and a killer wrap to a killer day on the Eastside.

So there I was cruising the grove with my usual bag of tricks and they just weren’t cutting it. I walked the road looking into the grove and then it hit me. I was doing it all wrong!

I don’t know what it was but I realized that “more” DOF was wrong for what I was experiencing. I was shooting with the 18AF so I opened it up to f2.8 and looked at the LCD. I thought I was onto something.

It’s then I ran back to the truck and pulled out the 24f1.4 and started shooting at f1.4. The challenge was keeping the film plane parallel with those elements in the photograph I want sharp and having those elements I don’t want sharp, out of that plane.

I’m pleased that even with these thumbnails you get a sense of the feeling the minimum f1.4 DOF brings to the forest. It’s a technique I have tucked back in the back of my mind to use again. It was a great time cruising a favorite grove on the Eastside!

How’d we work this stretch of fall color? We walked of course! I gave the gang the instructions to walk around the grove and look up and shoot up through the color to start. After those clicks, simple start looking for target of opportunity and there were plenty of those. I set up this shot after I saw Jake cruise on by. He relented and “posed” for Dad for this click. I would have liked more of his feet in the photo by the parking lot was disgusting so cropped to what you see.

This is a favorite place of ours but then that’s what our Eastern Sierra Adv is all about. Sharing these favorite places to take a camera. You might think after our time at Conway Summit that we’d be tired of fall color. No Way!

Seriously, look at this stretch of road, could YOU pass it by? We not only couldn’t pass it by, we drove right to it to spend some time and man, did it provide plenty of passion to fill the pixels. The only think I did to this photo in post was to “resurface” the road with a shade of black, darkening it with a simple Curve in PS. mtc
