I had the 600mm out, Jake was shooting with his 70-300 and found this cool scene across the lake. The drama in the scene is all from the light, it’s falling on this point and nowhere else. So this shot was cool but it was missing something. Just what, I didn’t know until a minute later.

Then this fisherman came trolling along. The light had changed a bit as the sun rose but I liked the final result. If I hadn’t had the 600mm out, I wouldn’t have been able to make the shot. Many landscape photographers don’t go out with long glass which is understandable. Since I’m usually shooting with long glass when working with wildlife, I’m very use to shooting landscapes with long glass. It was simply fun!

You might remember back a week when we were in ME scouting for our ME DLWS, I went to the artsy fartsy side and shot some reflections. I had mixed emotions on their success. Well while at Convict Lake I saw some reflections and decided to pull out the 600mm and give a couple a click. Here’s one of them. Kinda fun but what it lead to was even funner! mtc

Our Eastern Sierra Adv are about a whole bunch of things other then just taking pictures of pretty places. I take nearly every group to our favorite fishing hole, Convict Lake. Why do we go here? It’s an incredible light/exposure photographic challenge around. Just look at the two images.

The difference between the two images here is just five minutes in time and two frames. A few weeks back, Photomatic Pro released an update, 4.01. I’ve found it does the math just a little sweeter but I had not yet had the opportunity to run any testing. As you’ll see with the posting of the rest of the ESA postings, I used it alot. The top image is a 7 image HDR and the bottom is a 5 image HDR and to me, there is all the difference in the world. The top, 7 image HDR looks pretty much like what I saw (but no way what the camera to capture in 1 frame). The bottom looks like a bad HDR. Since I’m using HDR just for the heavy lifting of combining all the light, the top image really caught my attention. mtc!

And as quickly as the drama comes, it goes and what’s left to you are subtleties of form and color. This is what happens in just a matter of minutes from the clicks on the last post.

Now you might be thinking I have these in the wrong order since the top one is darker then the bottom but that’s the way it happened. During the down pour it was dark for Mt Morgan but as the down pour released all the energy from the cloud, light started to get through. I have so many more images taken this day that are waiting to be processed. You can see though really easily why I keep repeating what John Muir called this place we call home, The Range of Light!

A short time later, we’re down the road a little further when all the energy building in the skies let loose and man, it was simply, undoubtedly, amazing weather preforming magic for our cameras!

Here’s the massive challenge. I’m shooting towards the sun, it’s on the right side of the photo. The clouds are dark as sin and then there is all that light leaking through. One capture wasn’t going to bring out that detail let alone the tans in the foreground. Both of these images are 5 image HDRs. Why don’t they look like HDR? I’m using it only to grab the highlight and shadow detail and that’s all. When mother nature provides you this kind of drama, I’ll be damned if I’m going to mess with it!

Heading down the hill I thought I wanted to go south. Once in the flats and looking around, I said let’s go north. Then a second later I said, “Nope, let’s go south.” Then I looked north again and said, “Keep heading south!” Having been in an area for 50yrs and exploring it during every time of day and season and with a little sixth sense on weather helps in instances like this when the heavens open up.

Western movie buffs will recognize this place from such classics as True Grit and Nevada Smith. The Hot Springs are a favorite locale WHEN the heaven are full of drama which today, they sure were. This is a 7 image HDR to pull off the range of light, especially the god beams.
