The boys had been on their best behavior so I took them to a favorite fall locale. Another life ago, a photo from this same locale, possible same boat served as an ad campaign for Agfa Film, so I’ve always been partial to it.

It’s really just a simple class in light, form and texture that is so bloody fun to do! We spent a good hour here playing with the hulls as they reflected the killer cloud overhead bouncing down really sweet light.

The natural brassing on the bottom of the boats is what really sets them off. If they were all pretty and clean, they might not have been as fun.

I shot so much this morning that I’ll be blogging pit and pieces of it for weeks to come. You really can’t ask more from a morning then such a reward. And I did it with just one cup of coffee. Miracles do happen!

I don’t wanta brag or anything, oh yeah I do…I know how to pick dates for an adventure! Fall color will peak in the next day or two and the weather is SPECTACULAR for photography. And the Eastside, it has some of the best color in the country. These images are right out of the camera. Just take a look!

And this, probably my favorite fall color photo I’ve taken in the last decade. I knew it as soon as I put it in the viewfinder. Why? Well, I’m putting up these blogs on the fly. We’ve got killer thunderheads cooking over the house and gorgeous light so I’ll have to leave the reason why for a later posting. Wish you were here, this is truly paradise!

And just like that, the clouds slip away, the sun comes up and as it happens often at Mono Lake, the shooting becomes a challenge. A challenge why? Because you have to work for your images, mother nature doesn’t dump them at your feet.

What I like to do in these cases is go to B&W. Now I stood exactly where I did to make this click because the dispersing cloud left a little halo around the top of the Tufa on the left. Looking at the thumbnails here on the blog, it just looks like a processing screw up. And if I didn’t say anything, half of you wouldn’t have noticed it and the other half would have thought processing error. It’s those little details that can make or break a photo.

Fall on the eastside, I still know of no batter place to experience or enjoy fall and all its rewards. I’ve been “doin” fall now for 8 weeks and while saw the best “eastern” color this past week, nothing beats the color at home!

We started off at one of my still favorite places, Mono Lake. These photos were taken this morning, they hot off the sensor. And the sum up a point I try to make with folks. Move!

Mono Lake is a busy place right now with the fall color in the hills and the full moon rise comin up. So as much as I watch the scenery, I watch other photographers and parking is really common. They put down their tripod and there they stay until time to get breakfast. What you see here is just five minutes of time but in those five minutes the clouds change and since they tie everything together, I felt I had to move ten feet to my right. I’m glad I did, a stronger photo for it. For both photos, a split grad .9 was used and the camera’s WB was Cloudy A6 with -2.5 exp comp. Easy stuff.

So hopefully, you’ve been wondering about how when shooting at 1/20 – 1/45 I was stopping the action. This little bull wasn’t holding still, was always on the move. Under those conditions, how do you stop the movement?

Stopping the action is something I talk about alot in my new book Captured in many places in many ways. The most common methods are fast shutter speed (not available in this scene) or working with Peak of Action. That’s simply what I did here. As the Moose raised its head, it would stop at a point and for a heartbeat, hold still with its head raised. That’s when I went click. Regretably, you can’t see here that the top image is not tack sharp and the bottom one is. I only kept the top image for this post, I deleted it from my files.
Is there an issue with both photos I don’t like? Something else I talk about in my book is the subject’s appearance. In this case, the ears are back and that just drives me nuts!

We headed out our last morning to see a gorgeous sun rise. It lit up the remaining fall color which we took as a positive sign. No matter what you have on your agenda, when you see great light, you gotta stop and click.

No matter looking up or looking out, in all directions it was gorgeous. I’ve been to Baxter I don’t know how many times but I’ve never seen it this explosive with fall color! It was just spectacular, so spectacular I could have easily forgotten out objective….for a moment.
