Caddo Lake 04-09 Nov, 2026

Located in Texas & Louisiana, Caddo Lake is literally like no other place I’ve ever been too. Caddo Lake is a 25,400-acree lake and bayou, a massive “man made” lake containing many wonders and that’s what we’re going to photograph. A locale of endless sunrises and sunsets, its fall color is like no other. Here, see for yourself, look at the images from our last visit.

The fall color blankets the forests lining and IN the lake. The reflections are doing to be amazing! We explore this photo rich environments each morning for four hours with a great captain who has been exploring Caddo for decades. This time, we are also doing sunsets a couple of nights. We’re on a great photo platform as we cruise the waters. The combination puts us in the right place at the right time like the sunrise photo above. Notice the water is a mirror and we’re in a boat. That takes skill! The price includes transportation once you land in Dallas until you’re taken back, boat and captain/guide, education and entertainment is $2950. The Ryan SCW-145 is a pretty darn cool aircraft! Pretty rare and Russ keeps it darn shiny. It is gorgeous with the coolest of cockpit. And none of that is coming through in this photograph. When I put the Benro Table Top down with the camera rig perched on top and looked at the flipped-out monitor, what I saw was a long-ago childhood memory. The sun was thinking about rising, there was a nip in the air and I was all alone at the parking area. This is one of the photos I look back at and all those memories come together. Photographs, sometimes it’s just for me.

The American Bison is recognized around the globe as a magnificent symbol of our mighty West. This is that Bison for sure, but it doesn’t live where folks normally see Bison. In fact, it’s quite a bit south of your typical herds in Yellowstone, Custer and even the National Bison Range. This bull is part of the herd on Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The small giveaway to this fact is the cholla cactus. It’s a plant you don’t see elsewhere on its range. It’s what makes this not your typical portrait.

Philmont Scout Ranch is a working ranch. They have vast pastures on the New Mexico landscape with horses (about 230 head) and cattle. I’m not a cowboy shooter, so to have the opportunity to work with these charismatic characters in such a romantic setting, how can I say no? It’s all set up, not by accident. That is everything but the horses, which they are rounding up to run past our lenses. Them horses have a mind of their own! That’s what Buckie was dealing with when I made this click. I saw the light on the ground from the setting sun. I could see Buckie was riding in that direction, so I zoomed to 600mm and tracked him in the viewfinder until he was where you see him. I made a whole lot of clicks of Buckie last night, but this is my favorite. I simply love the last light on the range.
