They are comical for sure! Prairie Dogs live in large towns, safety in numbers. Their social structure is complex, with some having specific duties. The Pickets are essential to the town, warning when danger comes. When they sound the alarm, they scatter and take cover underground. Photographers are at first are a threat, sending the dogs running. One way to get photographs with these, at first, shy critters, is shooting from the vehicle. Another, and my preferred, is to plant. It’s real simple, the less you move, the more you shoot. The last thing you want is, hold me, he’s back!

Not A Morning Swallow

Stage left and just out of the frame is its birdbox home where this male Tree Swallow had just popped out from long before sun up. What he didn’t expect was that I would be there, lens pointing in his direction. It was just dumb luck that I was right there when it popped out. Once it was out, though, the lens was trained on him, and from his reaction, I hoped it wasn’t me as I took it as he was simply not a morning swallow.

Something to “Lark” about?

I know it should be something to crow about, but it’s a lark and I have to face it later (at least I hope to). Sunrise was such a treat this morning, and to be sharing it with all the critters in the Black Hills, SD, makes it just that more special. The Western Meadowlarks this time of year truly celebrate spring with their song because they truly do have something to lark about!

The Great American West

The American Bison, such an iconic critter of the West. I also look for them when I’m around ridges for the drama that connection can create. It just helps add to their majestic nature, and they often need help in that department. Then, when you have afternoon thunderstorms building and they ridgeline, then you’re talking big drama. It screams the great American West!
