Yeppers, ‘Tis the Season

The Ranch captured by Z 6III / Z24-70f2.8

10:30, time to take Maggie out for her morning exploration. I grabbed the Z 6III and headed out to see what’s what. It’s a warm 12 degrees and the fog has lifted but left its mark. It’s the magical time of the year when winter is making its presence known without actually snowing. When I worry about taking out a camera cause I could slip on the ice and, well …. I simply love this time of year as the critters are in their winter coats, and very active when the sun hits them. Yeppers, ’tis the season.

View Out The Window – Ya Never Know

Lockheed P2V-5F Neptune captured by Z 6III / Z26f2.8

I always get a window seat, way too much photography going on outside that window. When I launched from MSO on Monday heading to the Nikon Ambassador Summit, I was looking out and saw a Neptune in a new place. They are building a museum for the Forest Service and the Neptune is one of the exhibits. It’s located at a place on the field I would never go past other than, looking for the Neptune. I wanted to check it out when I landed to see what’s what. The challenge was to remember to do that cause normally once I get my luggage after a flight, my mind is just on getting home.

I wrote myself a note but I had to keep the note out front and center in NY cause if I didn’t see that note, I would forget. Then when heading to the airport to fly home, I wrote the note on the back of my hand. I didn’t want to forget. Sharon had told me there was a freezing fog all day but I didn’t know how thick or widespread it was. When we landed, I couldn’t even see the terminal from the runway. I left the airport, made the left-hand turn, and started to look for the Neptune I spotted days before. After driving a few miles, I spotted it, barely.

The Neptune was shrouded in fog at first and I figured I’d just take reminder shots and come back and do it right later. But then the fog started to lift, the sun came out and the shooting was on. This retired firefighter is a badass plane! It was fun to be able to photograph it in both color and B&W. Just goes to show to check the view out the window, ya never know.

“How’d You Capture that Detail?”

Common Raven (w/telemetry pack) captured by Z 9 / Z600f4TC @840mm

That’s was the question of the weekend with the #1 guessed answer being, “the lens.” And while the Z600f4TC is blistering sharp and that adds to the answer, it is not the answer. #2 to be the believed answer was “something” in post, which is far from the answer as this image is straight from the camera. Nope, the answer is the most simple one, the light! As you can see in the photograph, it was snowing and there was snow covering the rock. The very soft light wrapped the Raven from top to bottom. That soft light along with overexposure of +.03 and the WB set to 6000K (Cloudy) captured the iridescence of its feathers, something we normally don’t see in harder light. That detail brought out with the light is why you see it in the photography. Yeah, the Z600f4TC @840mm made it possible to walk up handholding the rig to the male while it called and is sharp as a dickens, it’s the light that makes the detail pop. The light is the most common answer to strong images, especially “How’d your capture that detail?”
